IMPROVEMENT IN LADDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,497, dated September 25, 1877; application filed July 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOSES FOSS, of Cairo, in the county of Alexander and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Ladder, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the two sections arranged as a step-ladder. Figs. 2 and 3 show the manner of connecting together the two sections when it is desired to convert them into a long straight ladder. The platform or foot-stand is shown in these two figures.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letters A A designate the sides of the two ladder-sectionsB B. Each one of the sections is composed of open braced sides, with blocks a between each pair of bowed bars forming a side. These blocks areceive through them the rounds O, and the whole are rigidly secured together by means of bolts or rivets.
The lower ladder-section B has two flat clasping-hooks, b b, rigidly secured to its upper end, and extended outward at right angles to the side bars, and through these hooks and the sides A A holes are made to receive the ends of screws 0, and are tapped through the lower ends of the sides of the ladder-section B. This lower ladder-section is also provided with a rope, e, which is made fast to one of the lower rounds, and has a hook,f, attached to it.
The ladder-section B is constructed like the lower section B, with the exception that the lower end of the former is curved and notched, as shown at d, so that when the two sections are put together, as shown by Figs. 2 and 3, to form a long ladder, the upper section will be nearly in a plane parallel to the lower section, and the curved portion of the upper section will have a bearing against the hooks b b, and will be firmly held by these books and the top round n, which is received into the notches 01.
By detaching the sections and adjusting them as shown by Fig. 1, and using the screws and rope above described, I have a very substantial step-ladder, either section of which can be mounted.
G designates a platform or footstand, which may be of any desired width, and which has two legs, h h, secured to its ends and connected together by a round, i. The lower ends of the legs are notched and adjusted on one of the rounds of the ladder, and the foot-stand has a spring-hook, r, fixed to it. which is clasped on another round of the ladder. This safely secures the platform to the ladder, and
allows the same to be readily detached.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A ladder whose sections B B are provided with open sides formed of bowed bars and intermediate blocks, the rounds being passed through said blocks, as and for the purpose specified.
