IMPRQVEMENT IN SHIPPING-CAMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,693, dated September 11, 1877; application led February 14, 1877.
To all whom Vit may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL OROAKE, of the city of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping-Gans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of my can. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a section ofthe same, showing the nozzle, adjusting-spring, and cover.
The object of my invention is to furnish a can for shipping and handling oils and other uids, constructed in such a shape that they may be closely packed together when being shipped, one upon another, without being jammed or broken, the nozzle and vents to which beingsecured beneath the head of the case which is made flat instead of conical, as in ordinary cans, and consists in a cylindrieally-shaped vessel made of tin or other sheet metal A, and is surrounded with narrow slats of wood B, which are held in their places by hoops C C, the top and bottom heads D of the can being flat, and are at right angles to the sides of the can.
The metal heads D are also protected by wooden heads, or their equivalent, E. The slats B are also secured by being nailed to the top and bottom heads E. The nozzle consists of two tubes, I and J, one overlapping the other. -The tube I is attached in a stationary manner to thel head D, and extends upward to a point a little below the upper head E of the case, and has a bead around its upper end, which prevents the tube J from being withdrawn. The tube J is so arranged that it may be drawn out above the head E of the case when desirous to pour the duid from the can, or at pleasure forced beneath the head and secured by the cover K, which closes above it. The cover K is attached to the head E by a hinge, L. When the cover is closed it is thus secured by a button, M, or its equivalent. There is a spiral wire spring, N, surrounding the tube I, the purpose of which is to throw up the tube J and hold it in its proper position when desirous to empty the cans.
There is a vent at O in the can which is closed by turning the screw P. When the washer Q, whichis made of leather, or its equivalent, is compressed between the screwheadV and the mouth of the vent, and the vent is thereby closed, the vent is opened by a reverse movement of the screw. There is a bracket, R, attached to the tube S, which also serves the purpose of a nut or screw in which the screw P is operated. The lower end of the screw P is riveted or otherwise enlarged to prevent its being Withdrawn from the nut. The tube S is securely attached to the top head D of the can. T is the bail to the can, by which it is handled, and is attached to the can-ease by eye-screws or their equivalent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the can A and case B, provided with the securing-cover K, the xed tube I, and movable tube or sleeve J, and the spring N, the latter surrounding the tube I, and bearing on the under side of the sleeve J, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
