This invention relates generally to slitting devices, and has more particularly reference to slitting devices associated with winding machines.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is disclosed in several concrete and preferred forms in which Fig. 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic view, partly in section, of a portion of a slitting and winding machine embodying one form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view substantially on the plane of line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view looking in the direction of arrow 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing a modified form of the invention; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view substantially on the plane of line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
1 and 2 indicate two surface winding drums spaced apart and rotatable in the same direction, and 3 is a slitting device to coact with one of said drums. 4 is a guide roll to direct a web of flexible material 5 to the underside of drum 2 which is the rear drum, the web thereafter passing to the underside of the front drum and partially around the' latter to a winding shaft (not shown) that rests in the valley between the drums. Rear drum 2 constitutes a member with which theslitting device coacts and is here a backing roll having a hardened surface; the slitting device comprises here one or more score-cut slitters. The general arrangement shown is substantially that disclosed in application Ser. No. 439,577, filed March 28, 1930 in which the rear drum acts as one of the slitting members and in which the front drum acts as a breast roll.
Suitable means are provided to move the slitting device from an inaccessible but operative position in contact with the'rear drum-to an accessible but inoperative position in front of the front drum and vice versa.
In the present instance these means take the following form. The slitting device is mounted in a carriage or support 6 adapted to travel on track 7 from a position beneath the rear winding drum to a position in front of the front winding drum and vice versa. It will be understood that the carriage may support one or more slitters as 8, individually spring pressed or yielding as by means of spring 50, so that a plurality of slitters may be moved as a group by means of the carriage, and that, if a plurality of slitters are used, said slitters may be individually adjustable transversely of the machine by slidably mounting same on transverse spacer bar 9. width of the carriage may be equal to the length of the rear drum and all of the slitters may be mounted on said carriage. 10 indicates an adjustable stop to variably limit the rearward or inward movement of the carriage so that the point of engagement of the slitter and the rear drum may be determined and thereby the pressure with which the slitting device engages the backing roll. In addition to the slitter, the carriage may also be provided with a web severing device 11 positioned in line with the slitter and projecting between the slitted sections of material so as to sever any remaining threads. This web severing device, of which there may be a plurality, is mounted on a rock-shaft 12 adapted to be turned by handle 13 as indicated in full and dotted lines. 14 is a trim guide, also mounted on the carriage, to prevent the severed strip of trim at the edge of the web from passing to the front drum and winding mechanism.
In the exemplification of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the carriage is provided with ball bearings 15 that travel in grooves 16 of the track. Suitable means to raise and lower the track are provided which, in this instance, take the following form: the track is hinged, at a pointv in front of the 0f the front drum, by being pivotally supported on shaft 15*, and its free end rests on eccentric 16 carried by shaft 17. Shaft 17 is provided with a handle as 18, and it will be seen that by turning shaft 17, and thereby eccentric 16 the free end of the track may be lifted or lowered. Suitable means such as ratchet 19 and pawl 20 are employed to retain the track in the position to which it has been adjusted. In addition, there is a latch 21 pivoted to the track at 22 to engage a pin 23 on the carriage and, if desired, this latch may be automatically released when the track is lowered by arm 24, movable with the eccentric, striking lever 25 on latch 21, and it will be seen that, when arm 24 strikes lever 25, said lever comes against stop 26 on the side of the track thereby raising the latch.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5, track 27 is pivoted at 28 and carriage 29 is provided with racks 30 with which engage pinions 31 mounted on shaft 28 to thereby shift the carriage back and forth. As before, a stop 32 is employed to limit the inward movement of the carriage, and an eccentric member 33 on shaft 34 is utilized to raise and lower the free end of the track. The carriage is provided with a spacer bar35 on which slitting devices as 36 are mounted and are individually adjustable. In the present form of the invention, web severing members 3'7 are pivoted at a center 39 and an arm 40 is provided with which engages rod 41 carried by-bell cranks 42 pivoted at 43 on the car riage, By moving said bell crank to the raised position indicated in full lines, members 3'7 are raised into operative position and by moving it into the lowered position indicated in dotted lines, said members 37 are lowered. A latch 44 having two openings 45 either of which may engage pin 46 is employed to retain the bell crank in its adjusted positions; 38 is a trim guide.
The generaloperation of both forms of the invention is as follows: let us assume that the parts occupy the position shown in full lines. If the operator now wishes to make an adjustment or a repair of the slitting and associated devices, he will lower the track and move the carriage into the dotted line position. Ready manipulation of the slitting device is now made possible, and, after such manipulation has occurred, the carriage is returned to its inward position and the track is raised. Or, if desired, the track may be adjusted and the position of stop 10 or 32 may be determined for a certain class of work to thereby establish the requisite degree of tension of spring 50. when the slitter is in operative position, and the carriage may then be moved out from beneath the rear drum and back again without lowering the track. It will be seen that, if this mode of operation is followed, the slitting element passes by the crest of the backing roll, while in engagement with the latter, during the in and out movement, and that this action is made possible by reason of spring 50.
I claim:
1. The combination of a pair of surface windmg drums spaced apart, located at approximately the same level and rotatable in the same direction, the rear one of which has a smooth surface and constitutes a backing member with which a score-cut slitting device coacts, means to guide a web of flexible material to the underside of the rear drum, the web thereafter passing to the underside of the front drum, a track extending from a point beneath the rear drum to a point adjacent the front of the front drum, means to raise and lower the track, a carriage movable over said track from a position beneath the rear drum to a position adjacent the front of the front drum and vice versa, and a scorecut slitting device mounted on said carriage to coact with the rear drum.
2. The combination of a pair of surface winding drums spaced apart and rotatable in the same direction, the rear one of which has a smooth surface and constitutes a backing roll, a track hinged at a point below and adjacent the front of the front winding drum and extending beneath both drums, means to raise and lower the free end of the track to thereby cause it to swing around its pivotal support, a carriage movable over said track from a position beneath the rear drum to a position adjacent the front of the front drum and vice versa, and a score-cut slitting device, mounted on said carriage, to coact with the rear drum.
3. The combination of a pair of surface winding drums spaced apart and rotatable in the same direction, the rear one of which constitutes a backing roll, atrack hinged at a point below and adjacent the front of the front winding drum and extending beneath both drums. means to raise and lower the free end of the track to thereby cause it to swing around its pivotal support, a carriage movable over said track from a position beneath the rear drum to a'position adjacent the front of the front drum and vice versa,
a score-cut slitting device, mounted on said carriage, to coact with the rear drum, and a stop to limit the inward travel of the carriage to thereby determine the point of engagement of the slitting device with the rear drum.
4. The combination of a pair of surface winding drums spaced apart and rotatable in the same direction, the rear one of which constitutes a backing roll, a track hinged at a point below and adjacent the front of the front winding drum and ex ending beneath both drums, means to raise and lower the free end of the track to thereby cause 'it to swing around its pivotal support, a carriage movable over said track from a position beneath the rear drum to a position adjacent the front of the front drum and vice versa, a transversely extending spacer bar mounted on said carriage, a score-cut slitting element, transversely adjustable on said bar, to coact with the rear drum, and a stop to limit the inward travel of the carriage to thereby determine the point of engagement of the slitting element with the rear drum. v
5. The combination of a backing roll, a yielding score-cut slitting device to engage the backing roll, and means to move the slitting device from an inaccessible but operative position in contact with the backing roll to an accessible but non-operative position out of contact with the backing roll and vice versa including: a movable support that carries the slitting device into engagement with the backing roll on one side of its crest and then past the crestto the other side thereof, said slitting device yielding in passing over the crest and following the contour of the drum.
6. The combination of a pair of surfacewinding drums spaced apart and rotatable in the same direction, the rear one of whichhas a'smooth surface and constitutes a backing member with which a score-cut slitting device coacts, means to guide a web of flexible material to the underside of the rear drum, the web thereafter passing to the underside of the front drum, a scorec ut slitting device to coact with the rear drum, and means to move the slitting device from an inaccessible but operative position in engagement with the rear drum past the crest of the front drum to an accessible but inoperative position in front of the front drum.
