IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.

Specification forming. part of Letters Patent No. 194,203, dated August 14, 1877; application filed June 23, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, VAN RANSELEAR WILGOX and AURELIUS BENEDrcT, of Perry, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, and GEORGE BENEDICT, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Churn-Dash, of which the following is a specification:

The accompanying drawing represents a sectional side elevation of our improved churn dash. it

The invention relates to an improved churndash, that works in quick and easy manner, for churning butter; and it consists of a tubular churn-dash with enlarged conical lower part and top valve for admission of air. The dash slides in the wood-lined cream-saver, and rests on a supporting spiral spring placed between the cream-saver and a fixed flange or collar of the dash. The cream-saver is supported in a socket that is attached by its slotted base to the churn-lid.

[n the drawing, A represents our improved churn-dash, that is made of tubular shape, with an enlarged conical part, A, at the lower end, that takes up the cream and forces the same, by the downward motion of the dash, with considerable force upward into the conical lower part of the dash, The upper end of the dash is provided with a wooden top or cap, B, having a valve, C, for the admission of air on lifting the dash, so as to accelerate the downward motion of the cream.

The dash A rests, by a flange or collar, a, on a spiral spring, I), which is supported at the lower end on a ring, (1, that rests by radial'arms d on the edge of thecream-saver D.

The cream-saver D is made of funnel shape, in the customary manner, but provided at the inner side with a wood lining, e, to prevent the metal of the dash to come in contact with the metal of the creamsaver, and color the cream by a black sediment, caused by the friction of the metals.

The cream-saver D is supported in a cylindrical socket or neck portion, D, which is secured, by its slotted base, intermediate packing, and set-screws f, to the lid of the churn.

The spring of the dash serves to support the weight of the same, and renders the motion of the same easy, as the spring facilitates the return of the dash.

The cream-saver prevents the cream from working over the top of churn while churnmg.

When desired, a whistle device may be connected by a chain to the cap B, and inserted on removing the cap, so as to serve as signaling device or dinner-horn.

The churn -dash breaks up the cream. in rapid manner by the assistance of the pressure of the atmospheric air, while the motion of the dash is made easy by the cushioningspring, so that the churn is worked in rapid, easy, and effective manner.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A tubularchurn-dash having enlarged lower conical part and top cap, with valve for admission of atmospheric air'on raising dash, substantially as and for the purpose set lorth.
