6 Claims. (Cl. 20G-58) My present invention relates generally to containers, and has particular reference to a container or box adapted to contain a roll of waxed paper or the like. v t

It isa general object of my invention to provide a box of improved characteristics, of a staunch yet pleasing appearance, and provided with a novel cutting device adapted to facilitate the withdrawal, in desired sections of the contents. g

It is a more particular object of my inven` tion toV provide a box having a container por` tion with upstanding side walls, and a cover portion adapted to enclose the container portion and the contents thereof inv a secure and substantially air-tight manner.

In accordance with my present invention, one of the upstanding side walls of the container portion is provided at itsupper freeedge with a` cutting device of improved characteristics, the device beingv of a simple and inexpensive character, compact, eilicient in fulfilling its conf templated function, fand devoid of sharp edges, protrusioIlS, teeth,Y or corners. g

A particular'featurel of Vmy invention lies in providing a cuttingdevice wherein, a cutting edge is so positioned "and is so `associated with a guard portion that accidental injury bythe cutting edge, 'either Yto vthe contents ofthe box or to theflngers ofthe user, is totally prevented. In this respect, my invention is analogous in itssafenature to thef corresponding safety provided for inA asafety'ravzor wherein a cutting edge is closely associated with a guard therefor.

In `the illustrated embodiment, the container portion is substantially rectangular and clon-- gated, having a bottom wall 10, opposite upstandinglongitudinal sidewalls 11 and 12, and 70 opposite upstanding end walls 13 and 14. l

Inthe villustrated embodiment, the upper edges of the side walls 11-14 are free and lie in a plane substantially parallel to the bottom 10. I have shown the cover member adapted to vtelescope around the container portion and consisting of a top wall 15, opposite depending longitudinalside Walls 16 and 17, and `opposite end walls. The box or container is adapted 'to accommodate a roll of paper illustratively shown at 18.

In accordance with my present invention, I mount 'in association with the upper free Vedge vof'one ofthe side walls, as, f orexample, the side wall 11, a cutting device which is most s. clearly shown in Figures 1 and 4. In the illustrated form, I have shown the employment of an elongated metallic strip whichV is medially bent back upon itself as at 19 to provide two 90 sections, one on each side of the bend or fold 19. IOne of these sections is `U-shaped and is designated by the referencenumeral 20, whereby the `same may be applied to the upper edge of the side wall'll as asheath for the latter. 95 To hold the device in place, it is preferably clenched onto the side wall in any suitable manner, and preferably by means of a longitudinal depression or ridge 21. The other longitudinal section of the metallic strip extends upwardly and then curves gradually outwardly over the ensheathed free edge of the wall'11 so as to provide an outwardly'disposed cutting edge 22. This cutting edgeis slightly spaced above the side wall 11 and preferably does not extend ou- 105 wardly beyond the vertical plane of the outer surface of the U-shaped section 20.

At its opposite extreme ends, the cutting edge 22 is twisted or bentiinto an upright disposition, as shown at 23 and 24, so that these end 1H' portions lie in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the wall 11.

When the cutting device is used, the free end of the roll of paper 18 is withdrawn upwardly alongside of the cutting device, and a desired amount of the paper may then be severed along the cutting edge 22 in the manner shown most clearly in Figure 1. The upright end portions 23 and 24 of the cutting edge facilitate the initial tearing of the paper, and once the tear has been initiated, it is a relatively simple matter to tear the paper along the cutting edge 22 in the manner illustrated.

It is to be noted that the cutting device of my present invention is extremely simple in structural nature and hence inexpensive to manufacture. Since no rivets or other fastening devices need be employed, it is comparatively simple to apply the same to the upper free edge of one of the side walls, and this may ber accomplished either at the `time the box lis originally constructedor at any time subsequent thereto. -I prefer to apply the cutting device during the manufacture of the box, so that the same may be clenched into position in the .simple manner illustrated.

I wish to point out that my cutting device is extremely compact and inconspicuous, occupying no unnecessary amount of space, and permitting free access to the .paper roll in the customary manner. Since it embodies no projecting edges of any character, apart from the upstanding end portions V23 and 24, which are extremely small and inconspicuous, the cutting device isexceptionally safe, rvand there is no likelihood whatsoever of accidental injury. The outer portion of the .U-shaped section 20 serves as a guard portion for the cutting edge 22, as shown most clearly in Figure 4, and it is only when the paper is deliberately pulled obliquely downwardly, as shown in Figures 1 and.3, that the edge becomes operative asa cutting edge.

Furthermore, .it is to be noted that the rounding of the metal strip, as at 19, vprovides for a smooth .upward withdrawal vof the 'paper from the box and prevents the free edge of the `paper from catching. VAs as matter of fact, the paper slides smoothly and evenly over the inner surface of the cutting `device as it is withdrawn, and the gradual curvature immediately yto the rear of the cutting edge proper facilitates the ready removal of vthe desired amount of paper.

When the box is closed, as shown in Figure 2, the cover is .permitted to Aseat itself lsnugly around the container portion, rin .the-same manner as an ordinary cover might -position itself. It isto be noted that the cover bears directly upon the outer surface of the U-shaped section 20 .and against the cutting edge 22, .the latter beingthereby efficiently concealed and protected, and the 'entire device presenting an outward appearance which is neat, attractive, and not marred by any projecting cutting edge or teeth. This capability of the cover to position itself snugly, as shown in Figure 2, produces a container which is peculiarly efficient and satisfactory in connection with waxed paper, because of the fact that Ythe vwaxed paper may be cornpletely concealed whenit is not used and may, therefore be protected from the atmosphere and kept clean vand air-tight. No portions of the paper protrude either partially or entirely when the box-isnot employed.

'I'he cutting device may be made of any suitable material, and need not necessarily be metal,

-and it may be desirable to provide a cover which is integral with the container portion and hinged to the latter, as, for example, at the upper edge of the wall 12.

Furthermore, it will be obvious that changes in the details herein described and illustrated forV the Vpurpose of explaining the nature of my invention may be made by those skilled in the art withoutfdepartingfromthe spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims. It is therefore intended that these details be interpreted as illustrative, and not ina limiting sense. y

Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In combination with a box open at the top and adapted to contain a roll of paper, a cutm5 ting device associated with the upper edge of one of the side Walls of said box, said device having a cutting edgeoverlying said upper edge and disposed in a plane `perpendicular to said wall, the extreme opposite ends of said cutting edge being twisted into a plane parallel to said wall to facilitate the initial tearing of said paper along said cutting edge.

2. In combination with a box open at the top and adapted to contain a roll of paper, a cutting device associated with the upper edge of one of the side walls of said box, said device comprising a metallic strip having a portion which ,overlies the inner surface .of said wall adjacent to said upper edge, said portion being bent outwardly at said upper edge to forma laterally disposed cutting edge, vand saidlmetallic strip having-a guard portion which underlies said cutting edge and ensheaths the Vupper edge of said wall.

As a new article of manufacture, a cutting device adapted to vbe applied to the free upper edge of a side wall of a. box, said device comprising a strip of material medially doubled back upon itself to form two llongitudinal sections, one section being U-shaped and adapted to be applied as a sheath over the free upper edge of said side wall, the other section terminating in a cutting edge. 3

As a newarticle ofmanufa'cture,` a'fcutting device adapted to be applied to the free upper edge of aside wall of a box, Vsaid, device comprising a strip of rigid material medially doubled back .upon itself to Yform two -longitudinal sections,one section being U-shapedl and adapted to be applied as a sheath over the free upper edge of the said side wall, the Aother section terminating in a cutting edge which is arranged transverse to the axis ofthe U and alongside of the base of the U.

5. In combination with a box open at the top and adapted to containa roll of paper,a cutting device associated with the free upper edge of one of the .side walls of the box, said device comprising a strip of rigid material medially doubled back upon itself to form two longitudinal sections, one section being inverted-U- shaped and ensheathing the free upper edge of said side wall, the other section terminating in a cutting edge which is arranged transverse to the plane of said side wall and above the base of the U.
