IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED COLLAR-BOX AND TOV BANK.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,420, dated July 24, 1877; application filed June 4, 1877. i

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HOMER N. PARKER, of Perkinsville, county of Windsor, in the State of Vermont, have invented certain Improvements in Boxes for Packing Collars, Cuffs, and other Light Merchantable Articles, which improvements are fully described in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the box containing the improvements in my invention. Fig. 2 is a` horizontal view of the same, taken at line No. 1 in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken at line No. 2 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a transverse sectional view taken at line No. 3 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a view of the rear side.

The object of my invention is to furnish a packing-box with a means by which the box may be adapted to be used as a savings-bank box, and have its cover securely held down to the body of the box, and an opening provided through which coin or paper currency may be readily passed Yinto the interior.

In the drawings, A represents the body of the box, composed of the sides a a al al, formed preferably of wood, though sheet material of metal or paper may be employed. The sides a a are made continuous with sides a1 al by curved corners c c, formed by bending the material composing the body A in the form shown in Figs. l and 2.

The material composing the several sides, and forming the body of the box, may be of one continuous piece, extending from the point wat the rear, as a place of beginning, and running around the several sides to include the same to the said place of beginning, where the two ends 1 and 2 are secured; or the said sides may be formed of two pieces, each running from x to z, so as to include a side, a,

and one-half of each of the sides al al, as

ingfrom av to z in opposite directions and uniting at their ends, I employ the ties B and B. The said ties consist of pieces of the same material the sides are made from, secured by cement, rivets, or other well-known `means for connecting in a mechanical manner the said ties with the conjoined end portions of the two halves of rear side a., or rear and front sides a a, as the case may be. The said ties may be made of any form that may be selected, and may be either plain or ornamental themselves, or be provided with ornamental figures or devices of printed or stamped character. i

C is the bottom, secured in a firm manner to the body A by any of the well-known means practiced by the trade.

D is the cover, hinged to the body A, and capable of being readily closed down to cover the upper open end. The hinge E is made in its one part, e, continuous with the tie-piece B, and with its other part, e', connected with the cover, as shown. The part e extends downward into the rear side a from the cover, at right angles to the same, so that it-may form, when the cover is turned down, a means for filling the upper portion of the space provided to receive the part c of the hinge, and, when the cover is turned open and back, cause the cover to be carried back from a line with the outer surface of the rear end, and thereby permit the finger of a person to pass down without touching the cover.

Between the lower edge of the part c of the hinge and the tie-piece B there is provided an oblong opening, s, having a width and extension of length sufficient to permit the passage of a piece of coin or paper currency when folded.

Made in the sides al a1 are catching-notches n n, Figs. 1 and 3. Secured to the cover Dis a locking-bar, d, having its ends extending outward to a distance from the center of width of the said cover, in both directions, to aggregate a length slightly greater than the distance between sides al a1. The ends of the said locking-bar are made` beveled, so as to be capable of operating with the upper edges of the sides al al, and spread them outward until the said beveled ends have entered into the notches In, n, when the said sides Will spring back and cause the said nbtches to engage with the beveled catching ends c fv, as shown in Fig. 3.

It is evidentthat a locking-bar, d', (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2,) secured to the front portion of the cover,'and adapted to have a beveled catching end enter a catching-notch of similar character to notches n, may be substituted. v Y,

When it is desired to open the box the operator will press the front and rear sides a a inward simultaneously, and thereby cause the sides 'al nl to spread outward to dotted lines a2 a2, when the catching ends v c of the locking-bar Will become wholly disengaged from notches n n, and the cover be released to permit its being thrown up.

It may be readily seen that by the, abovedescribed improvements in this invention the box may be cheaply, strongly, and neatly 'constructed, and be adapted, when not longer used as a packing-box, to serve the purpose of` a savings-bank box for children.

Having described my invention, Iwhat I claim, and desire tsecure by Letters Patent, 1s-
