Description
C. M. HALL Oct. 17, 1933.
GAS FUEL ECONOMIZER FOR BURNERS F iled'April 25, 1931 INVENTOR ATTORN Patented Oct. 17, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT This invention relates to economizers particularly adapted to be used in connection with burners using coal gas, or the like, as a fuel, as in the case of the burner of a domestic gas range.
The object of the invention is to provide a means for enhancing the heating efiect obtained from a given amount of fuel supplied to the burner.
This object is obtained by the construction and arrangement to be hereinafter described and illustrated.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 shows conventionally the burner of a kitchen gas range, the main supply pipe leading thereto, and the branch pipe connecting the same to the burner.
For showing the position of the restricting device to be hereinafter described, located in the main supply pipe, Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the main supply pipe and associated restricting device;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the restricting device; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of baflle.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same.
In the accompanying drawing, a conventional gas burner is designated a, the main gas conducting pipe b, and the usual valve controlled branch pipe leading from the main pipe to the burner is designated 0.
Within the pipe b, a distance from the burner of approximately three to ten feet, is located a restricting device comprising essentially a hollow, truncated, conical member 41, having its base arranged at right angles to the axis of the pipe b,
. of approximately the same diameter as this pipe,
and presented in the direction of the gas supply. The tapering wall of the cone is disposed at an angle of approximately fifty degrees to the base thereof. A small orifice e is provided through the truncated end of the cone and is preferably of an area coextensive with said end.
Preferably this cone constitutes one end of a hollow cylinder 1, which is open at its opposite end, which is of a diameter approximately that of the pipe b, and which is held therein in any desired way. As shown in the accompanying drawing, the marginal portion of the open end of the cylinder f is flanged and is held between adjacent ends of sections of the pipe b, which are coupled to each other by a suitable union.
A suitable baflle g is located in the lower portion of the cylindrical part 1 a distance from the cone. Preferably the baiile forms a section of a cone substantially corresponding to the trancated cone described. The edge of the baffle does not project beyond a plane parallel to the axis of the pipe and intersecting the lower part of the wall of the orifice e, and preferably the edge of the balile is substantially in alignment with the lower part of the wall of the orifice e in a direction axial of the pipe I).
The bafiie may be cast integral with the cylinder f, or it may be, as illustrated in Fig. entirely separate therefrom and removably and adjustably mounted therein.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4., the bafile is provided with a cylindrical extension irictionally engaging the inner wall of the cylinder 1. This extension may be threaded for engaging with threads formed in the inner wall of the section 1'.
I claim:
1. The combination with a gas burner, an im perforate main supply pipe and a branch pipe ineluding an air mixing device of a restricting device located in said main pipe and spaced a distance of from three to ten feet from the branch pipe, said device comprising a hollow truncated cone having an orifice through its truncated end and its base corresponding in diameter substan tially to the internal diameter of th pipe and presented in the direction of the gas supply, the tapering wall of the cone being disposed at sub stantially an angle of fifty degrees to the plane of the base.
2. The combination with a gas burner and. a main supply pipe leading thereto of a restricting device located in said pipe and spaced dis tance of from three to ten feet from the burner, said device comprising a hollow truncated cone having an orifice through its truncated end and its base corresponding in diameter substantially to the internal diameter or" the pipe and presented in the direction of the gas supply, and hafiie spaced from the cone and having its upper edge substantially in registration with the lower part of the wall of the orifice axially of the main pipe 3. The combination with a gas burner and a main supply pipe leading thereto of a. restricting device located in said pipe, said device comprising a cylindrical sleeve terminating at one end in hollow truncated cone, with an orifice through the truncated end of the cone, and a bafile con stituting a section of a cone substantially corresponding to the first named cone and spaced therefrom.
4. The combination with a gas burner and a main supply pipe leading thereto of a restricting device located in said pipe, said device comformed ing a hollow sleeve terminating at one end in a hollow truncated cone, with an orifice in the truncated end of the cone, and a bafile removably and adjustably mounted in said sleeve, said baflle being provided with an extension engaging and conforming to a section of said sleeve.
