2 Claims.
My invention relates to a rest for a saliva ejector.
The essential objects of my invention are to provide a rest capable of being readily mounted upon a saliva ejector for the purpose of relieving the soft tissues under the tongue in the floor of the mouth, of the pressure and Weight of the saliva ejector and its tube and with the rest so constructed and arranged for resting on the teeth of the patient thereby transferring the weight to the teeth; for relieving the patient of the pressure exerting by ejector and tube, which pressure very often is as uncomfortable and more continual than the occasional strong suction present in the old style of saliva ejectors; and to attain these ends in a strong, durable, compact, resilient readily installed and comparatively inexpensive structure.
To the above ends essentially and others which may hereinafter appear my invention consists of such parts and combination of parts Which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a saliva ejector showing installed therewith a rest in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the ejector with the rest attached thereto.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the rest.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5 5 Figure 4.
Referring to the drawing 1 generally indicates a saliva ejector including a head 2 of substantially inverted U-shape having an arcuate part 3 merging into a pair of oppositely outwardly inclined parts 4, 5, the former being of greater length than the latter. The part 5 merges into an outwardly inclined tube 6. The head 2 is formed with a partition 7 providing a pair of lengthwise extending compartments 8, 9 open at one end. An opening 10 common to the open end of said compartments is formed in the free end of part 4. .An opening 11 for compartment 8 is formed in part 5 in proximity to the point of joinder of the latter with tube 6. The other end of compartment 8 is closed. The other end of compartment 9 opens into tube 6. The foregoing is the Well known form of saliva ejector now in general use.r
A saliva ejector rest in accordance with my invention and which is adapted to be coupled to the parts 4, 5 of the head 3 consists'of a body 12 of resilient material of a length to be frictionally secured to parts 4, 5 and bridge the space between the latter. The body 12 is formed of an intermediate part 1'3 which gradually increases in diameter from its transverse center towards each end and terminates in a pair of substantially globular outer parts 14, 15 of greater diameter than the intermediate part 13. The parts 14, 15 are formed with'diagonally disposed, 50 oppositely extending slots 16, 17 respectively of a length to terminate at one end thereof at the top of the periphery and outwardly of the vertical median of said parts 14, 15 and to terminate at the other end thereof at the bottom of the periphery and inwardly of the vertical median of such parts. The slots 16, 17 are intersected by the vertical median of the parts 14, 15 and corresponding in contour to the cross sectional shape of the parts 4, 5 of head 2. The body 12 is com- 70 pressible and extendable and the Walls of slots 16, 17, when the body 12 is mounted on parts 4, 5 tightly grip the latter and extend in a direction corresponding to the direction in which the parts 4, 5 extend.
The rest can be adjusted to any depth mouth, and by adjusting the rest in combination with the ejector same can be confined to any location, forward and backward, in the mouth.
What I claim is:
1. For use in connection with a saliva injector having a flared U-shaped head rest comprising` a resilient body including an intermediate part and a pair of outer parts, each of said outer parts being slotted for mounting on the head of the ejector, said slots being diagonally disposed with respect to said outer parts and inclining in opposite directions with respect to each other.
2. A rest for a saliva ejector of that type including a flared U-shaped head comprising a. resilient body formed with spaced oppositely extending openings disposed diagonally of and in proximity to the ends thereof for the passage of the sides of the head, the walls of said openings frictionally gripping with the sides of the head for anchoring the rest in set position.
