Second, to provide a structure having these advantages in which the parts are simple and economical in structure and very strong and durable. Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical central section of a radiator closure embodying the features of my inventiontaken on a line corresponding to line 1--1 of Figs. 2, 4 and 6. i Fig. 2 is a'fragmentaryview partially in section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an invertedview of the cap proper.
Fig. 4 isa plan view of the closure neck.
'Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical central sec- .tion throughthe neck, the section lines corresponding to that of Fig. 1. r
Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on line 66 of" Fig. 7 is an inverted view of the spring closure.
disk and thrust member.
i In the accompanying drawings, the embodiment illustrated is such as I employ for radiator closures and the like. It will be understood that my improvements have very wide adaptation, but this disclosure will enable such adaptation as may be desired.
The neck 1 is provided with an inturned annular flange 2 constituting a gasket seat. On the inner edge of this flange I form two or more downwardly diverging or tapered socket or coupling members 3. These coupling members 3 are in the form of flange-like projections on the inner edge of the flange 2 and are provided with stops 4 at corresponding'ends thereof. I i
Thecap 5 is chambered and its flange 6 is of substantially greater diameter than the 'neck. The cap has a depending central shank 19 providedwith'lugs '7. The combined closure disk and shank provided with projecting lugs, a disk-like me'ntwith said lugs on said shank, saidcoucoupling member. The coupling member is shouldered at 13 and is provided with downwardly .flar-. ing segmental male joint or socket engaging members 1 1 adapted to be engaged, and disengaged with the socket members i by relative rotative I movement of the neck and cap. The'engaging movement tends not only to engage the parts-but to'exert a downward pull on the cap. 7 a
In the embodiment illustrated the-socket engaging members l i arel iormed as a part, of a continuous flange which permits the. coupling memberbeing formed asa sheetmetal stamping. The portions 15 ofthe flange constitute support-1 ing or reinforcing members and also stop engaging parts as showni'n Fig. 6. gasket or packing 16 is clamped between the shoulder 11 and the member 8 so that it is effectively secured to the cap with portions projecting-to engage the seat on the This seat is preferably provided-with an annue 5 lar bead 17' and the thrust member 8 is also 'prefev erably providedwith an annular head 18 dis-, posed in opposed relation to-the bead 17' S0 tha,t, the gasket has "a very effective-sealing engagement with these'p'arts. The member'S-constitutes 30 a thrust springv and closure member and,-in ef-- feet, is provided with a yielding facing engag ing thegasket seat on the neck. I Closures embodying'my'improvements may be very easily engaged and disengaged and the 130% tative'movement of the cap draws the gasket firmlyupon the neck seat. The spring yields :to permit this and alsoprovides a-tensioning means for holding the parts in their adjusted positions.
.That is, the member 8 applies yielding pressure I to the co-erigaging parts so that the cap will not become accidentally disengaged.
. My improvements are well adapted for 010-, sures for radiators and the like, the cap" lying closetotheneck, j" .U y
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new-and desire to secure by -Letters Patent is: i
