The present invention pertains to improvements in a cigarette holder or ypipe stem and hasr for one of yits objectsto provide a construction comprising complementary elements which may 5 be quickly assembled in compact relationship characterized by an air tight seal to preclude leakage between contiguous contacting faces thereof and as another object the invention comprehends a device which .may be readily .separated whereby access may be hadto the interior of the elements collecting saliva and other juices deposited therein for quickly removing the objectionable deposits by Washing and cleansing in any Well known fashion.
More particularly theinvention contemplates provision of means for supporting one end of a' cigarette in a pocket defined by` split complementary elements having corresponding" at faces mutually held in contacting relation after assembly by a casing or jacket. Y y
Another object is to provide novel means associated with a cigarette support for quickly discharging the cigarette member therefrom.
Specifically, another object is the yprovision of ed association with a casing, while another coniplement is frictionally held to the casing, al-
though it is Within the scope of the invention to provide each complement V,of the aforemenv'. 30Vtioned insert with means for frictionallyand wedgeably connecting Vwith the interior surfaces of the casing. z Y
Another aspectand a further advantage there- 35 of is in the provision of a split insert comprising Ycial adjustment to assemble preparatory to being `secured and held in proper relation by the caling.
Broadly speaking, the invention aims to provide a split insert having contiguous parts in contact and held in such contact by a unitary Idevice having an interior surfacev adapted to Isnugly and Wedgeably contact the `exterior surface of said insert and comprising in association with the aforesaid device in reality a one piece VVmember for carrying into eect the purposes uof the invention. 1 l
l A further object comprehends the Vprovision of a novel pipe bowl adapted 'to be sealed in air tight fashion bya split stem of complementary parts held inV operative relation by Va casing. It-'Willbe apparentrfrom the teachings of the present disclosure that the embodiments., herein set forth are Amerely suggestive of' thegtype' "of constructionsthat may be mploye'd'in carrying the invention intojeffefct;` a"s other'suitablefdet vices for a like purposebutof differentconstruc'- tion having an arrangementlof different elements may be employed in carryingr outthe ,principles of the invention.v Referring.,A more particularly to the cigarettefi'holder illustratedcinl'igs. 1-4
linclusive, 10 generally..designates a casing corn- 'prising a Aunitary member includllgjlie longiandtaperingbre 11 vvith 'the narrow end, thereof. at.the .mouth n casing `and `. itslongest gage 16 and 17 defining the longitudinal boregener .ally referred to, as 18 adapted to conduct the fumes or smoke from the cigarette (not shown)Y 2 countersunk and threaded as illustrated for a purpose hereinafter set forth. i
For increasing the ornamental appearance orA the casing the latter preferably has the mouthV piece portion elliptical having its narrower gage or dimension adjacent the guard 14, however, graduallyl increasing its gage therefrom until the elliptical surface merges with the cylindrical surface 14j substantially half the distanceA between theends of the casing and from that point the other half of the casing has an outer cylindrical surface. v
Associated with the casing and disposed withw in the tapering bore thereof is the cigarette supporting split insert, broadly denoted 15, which comprises complementary juxtaposed elements tion or threaded neck 21 to cooperate and engage .with the 'countersunk threaded portion 13 of the casing and an extension with flat grippingfaces 22 or cigarette receiving portion 22 including a depression as y23 adapted for supporting the cigarette member in pocket ZGdened by thedepressions when superimposed as illustrated, it Abeing noted that the extension of each complement comprises a stop or semi-annular shoulder 25 extending beyond or overhanging the casing which` stop limits movement of the insert within and against the casing.
To provide an air or smoke tight seal between.
the complementary elements of the insert, each element and extension thereof includes a smooth at face as 24 on both wings as 26 of its respec-.- .tive groove, the correspondingadjacent faces of the juxtaposed elements mutually contacting, which engagement is preserved to provide a leak proof joint by the casing or encompassing member 10 after the complements of the insert have been -assembled with their flat faces labutting and thrust into the casing after which kthe latter is threaded a'gainst'the threaded portions of the complements.-l With the complements secured in the casing, it willY be noted that the mouth piece ends thereof lie flush With the end plane of the casing and further .that the outside tapering curved surfaces of each complementary element bears snugly in engagementl with and against the curved inside tapering surface of the casingand in: this relation the shoulders 25 areagainst the end wall of the casing. It is thus apparent that not only isthe transverse leakage prevented bei tween the complementary elements, but additionally transverse leakage' cannot take place bevtween 'the insert and the casing.
@ToV secure acigarette in the holder, the split parts of the insert are first disconnected from the fcasing, one end ofthe cigarette being placed in a rdepression or seat of an extensionof one element, .the other depression of the associated complementary elenfientisy placed in registry over `the cigarette 1 and Vthe' insert carrying the Cigarette is bodily moved inwardly being Yclaouped in the `v'pocket constituted bythe superimposed depressions a ndas, the casingand the neck inembers 21 are connected, the shoulders or stops 25 are against the casing Wherebythe flat adjacent faces of the elements are held snugly in contact,
'being maintained in such contact by the clamping action of the casing.
If it is desired to discharge the cigarette from lthe insert thelatteris first unthreaded and one complement is slidably moved forwardly with respect to the other and the cigarette fallsoi without any need of the operator touching or picking the cigarette. As illustrated in Fig. l, each of the components of the insert is provided with a threaded enlarged neck 2l and each Wingv as 26 with flat and uninterrupted faces as 24.v `With the modification shown in Figs. 5 8 inclusive, only one component of the insert is provided with an enlarged threaded neck -portion as 30 While the other component includes a uniformally smooth uninterrupted circular but tapering outside surface extending from the undercut shoulder 3150i the extension 32'to the end face 33 of the terminal 34, it being noted, however, in ,thisV instance that the shoulder 3 1' although belovvv the upper surface of the casing still provides a stop to limit the movement of the casing along the insert or vice versa, bearing in mind that the gap formed betweeny the shoulder 36 and the adjacent end wall of the casing serves to per'- mit a finger nail ofthe operator therein.
In this Way, by applying an outward force against the shoulderedy element"15 will be slidf ably moved to the position indicated by the dotted lines as shown in Fig. thereby, discharging the cigarette member even though, the is retained by the casing.
Itrvfill be understood that although I 'have shown in Fig. 5 but one element having a smooth outside curved and tapering surface, both of the elements may be similarly; constructed,- (see Fig.
9) namely with' smooth curved tapering surfaces,
the elements apart from theirenlarged exten',- sions as 22 or 32 constitute a frustoconical bored body when assembled being uniformly tapering with the-outside entire surface't'hereof after assembled mutually and frictionally engaging the.
inner surfaces of the casing, the entire length thereof.
Further distinguishing in construction over the embodiment of Figs; 1*-4, the insert of Figs. 6-10 inclusive comprises an element with a longitudinally ldisposed indentation 39 in each Wing 40,
Whilethe contiguous element contains Ya longitudinally disposedrib or bead 43 in each wing as 44 on .the 'opposite side of its respective axial groove 45. The ribs of one component are guided T1730 by and may be slidably moved along'the adjacent indentations with the contiguous flat faces of the complements as well as the surfaces of the beads` and their corresponding grooves, in contact thereby preventing any transverse leakage transversely .-135
of the insert'.v
In Figs. 9 and 10, a supplementary lock may be provided for the enlarged split contacting exten-` sions as 22, which when assembled-have an outer contour, octagonal vin shape, as in Fig.2, but one extension of thev insert is provided Withl aV small but rounded protuberance' 45 adapted to be received by indent 46 of theother complement,I one extension being so arranged, that "anfoutward,
'thrust applied to the shoulder 47 will separate the .145'
elements to eject the cigarettepreviously retained other element v in the pocket'23 defined by the extensions as is vvell understood, it being further noted that each complement of the insert contains a continuously and uninterrupted smooth and vtapering but curved outsidegsurface,"andvvhen the elements broadly denoted 52 `'which includes split mentary elementsl and 17 having flat faces 53` are assembled, the outer surfaces thereof are frictionally and Wedgeably retained by the inner wall of the casing.
As heretofore mentioned, the invention broader aspects may be applied toa pipe in which 504 designates the bowl provided with the integral extension 51 for frictionally receiving the stem clude air or gas leakage by the removable jacket.
61, it being understood, of course, that the octag` onal intermediate and enlarged portion 62 of the insert limits the extent to which the latter may be moved into the extension or arm 51 of the pipe and that the vtobacco may beV suitably packed` above and around the perforated upper element. Thus it is apparentthat the pipe stem may be readily removed from the bowl and Yquickly detached and cleansed.v With the pipe stem revmoved, the bowl may be also easily cleansed.
The foregoing disclosure has been given by way of preference for clearness and understanding. Hence no unnecessary limitations should be understood and the appended claims should be construed as broadly as the state of the art permits.
