6 Claims.
This invention relates to means for automatically stopping roving frames, drawing frames, spinning frames, and the like such as speeders and the like from automatically stopping the machine when a certain number of layers of yarn have been wound onto the packages of yarn such as bobbins in a Speeder.
' It is an object of this invention to provide additional means driven by the speeder and the like whereby thestop motion mechanism which is conventional in the speeder and the like will be automatically operated when a definite amount of yarn has been wound onto the packages such asbobbins and the like.-
It is an object of this invention to provide a stop motion for speeders and the like whereby the speeder and the like can be stopped when the builder motion is applying yarn to the middle portion of the packages whereas in conventional stop motions the stoppage occurs when the yarn is being applied to the end portions of the packages of yarn. By use of my improved stop motion, the first layer of yarn can be begun midway, for example, of the packages of yarn and'fed downwardly first, then to the top of the package and then down to the bottom of the package which operation is repeated until the required number of layers of yarn has been wound onto the packages and then the machine can be stopped at a time when the yarn is being applied midway of the packages; thus giving two extra layers of yarn to the lower half of the package.
By my stopping the applying'oi' theyarn at the midway point on the packages, distinct advantages in doffing are obtained. 7
By use of my improved stop motion the carriage-for the builder motion in Speeders and the like can be stopped-while moving downwardly or upwardly. o
By adjustment of sprocket 30 on shaft 270, the builder mechanism can be stopped at any desired point on the packages.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an enlarged elevation showing the invention applied to the like; Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 2-2 in Figure 1; I

Referringmore particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates one of the samsons oi the specder and the likev to which is secured a suitable plate 11 having a hole 12 therethrough in which is adapted to operate knock-off latch 13 to which is secured a chain 14- for operation of stop motion mechanism and :other features which is not a part of the invention. Secured to plate 11 is a bracket 15 having bolts 16 and 17 penetrating slots 18 and 19 respectively for securing bracket 15 to samson 10. Bracket .15 has downwardly projecting portion 20 and upwardly projecting portion 21, said upwardly projecting portion having a suitable transverse bore therein with a set screw 22 penetrating the portion 21 and extending into said bore. Rotatably mounted in said bore is a bearing member 24 having a groove 25 therein adapted to receive the endof-the bolt 22. I This bearing 24 has a transverse slot 25a therein and at the other end thereof, has an extension 26thaving a slot 27 therein. Bearing member 24 has a bore extending longitudinallyv thereof in which is rotatably mounted a shaft 270 having an enlargement 28 on the end thereof of the saine size as theportion 26 on bearing member'24 and a. slot 29 is provided insaid member which, at times, is adapted to mesh with slot 27. y
Shaft 27c is adapted to have fixedly secured thereon a sprocket wheel 30 by means of set screw 31 and this sprocket wheel 30 has integral therewith a tongue 32 adapted to fit into slot Member 20 has a vertically disposed slot '35 therein in which the bolt 36 is mounted which also penetrates slot 3'7 in L-shaped member 38 which is forked at its upper end and in fork 39 is mounted a compression spring 40 adapted to press againstthe lower side of a lever '41 which'lever is pivotallymounted as at 42" in fork 43 of member 38. Lever4l has end portion 45 having set screw 46 therein which secures shaft 17 therein and on shaft 47 is loosely mounted a gear wheel 48 having a pin 49 there'- in. Loosely mounted on shaft 47, said shaft 47 being headed as at 50, is a vane 51 which is to press against knock-off latch 13 to automatically stop the machine and after passing above dead center at the top, vane 51 falls downwardly to assume a. neutral position ready to be overtaken by pin 49 and raised again.
If a clockwise direction is desired to be imparted to wheel 18 as shown in Figure 2, the parts are adjusted in the position shown in Figure 5 and in this position tongue 32 is pressing against the upper sidewall of slot 25a and slots 29 and 27 are in alignment and 011801 the teeth in gear wheel 48 falls into both slots 27, and 29 and the entire assembly of Figure 5 is moved further in clockwise direction in-Figure 2 and moves gear wheel 48 one tooth. But as the mechanism is reversed and shaft 57 moves in the opposite direction then tongue 32 must move to the lower side of slot 25a in l 'igure 5 before bearing member 24 is moved and in so doing shaft 270 moves with sprocket 30 and tongue 32 and, therefore, slot 29 is out of aiignment with slot 27 and gear wheel 48 being as broad as both members 26 and 28 the teeth of gear wheel 48 do not become engaged with either slot 29 or '27 and the gear wheel is not moved at all, but when the shaft Z'lcis moved again in a clockwise direction as seen in Figure 2, slots '29 and 2'7 will coincide when tongue 32 engages the upper side of slot 25a to move bearing member 24 and these two slots 2'? and 29 being aligned will allow gear 48 to fall therein to and allow the gear to be moved one tooth. The gear is gradually moved and pin 49 engaging vane 51 gradually raises the vane upwardly until it engages knock off latch 13 to raise it hole 12 to allow it to become disengaged from the lower edge of hole 12 and the conventional mechanism in the machine will move the knock off latch to the right in Figure 1 and automatically stop the machine.
In this manner the exact amount of yarn to be wound onto the the like can be regulated and the knock-off motion will automatically operate at predetermined times.
builder motion is Sprocket -wheel 56 moves in one direction while the builder motion of the machine ismoving upwardly, and in a reverse direction when moving downwardly so wheel 4.8 is moved one tooth for each two layers of yarn placed on the packages.
In the drawings and specificationpthere has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a yarn package forming machine such as a-speeder and the like having an oscillating carriage lifter shaft and a knock off: latch and -means connected to the knock oil latch for moving it to stop the machine and alsoyhaving means for holding the knock ofi latch in a position to allow the machine to operate, a gear to the packages of yarn, a

2. In a fiber preparation machine having yarn package forming means including a builder mo tion reciprocable vertically with relation to the packages of yarn, a knock off latch and an oscillatingcarriage lifter shaft, a gear wheel movable by alternate oscillations of the carriage lifter shaft, and means separate from but pivoted on the same center as the gear wheel engageable by said gear wheel for engaging the knock off latch to stop the machine.
3. In a fiber preparation machine having a yarn package forming means including a build er motion reciprocable vertically with relation knock off latch and an oscillating carriage lifter shaft, a gear wheel movable by alternate oscillations of the carriage lifter shaft, and means pivoted on the same center as the gear wheel engageable and movable by said gear wheel means for engaging the knock oiT latch to stop the machine.
4. In a stop motion device for package forming machines for yarn and the like having a builder motion controlled by a knock 'oil latch and having an oscillating-carriage lifter shaft for operating the builder motion, a gear wheel,
means connected with the said shaft for advancing said gear wheel step by step in; one direction, means pivoted on the same center as the gear wheel but separated from the gear wheel and, movable by the wheel for moving. said knock ofi? latch to stop the machine and :means m ld plying yarn to the packages at a point intermediate the ends of the packages.
5. In a stop motion device for package :forming machines for yarn and the like having, a builder and having an oscillating carriage litter shaft for operating the builder motion, gear wheel, means connected with the said shaft for advancing said gear wheeland' a vane pivoted freely wheel and movable against gravity by the gear wheel for .moving said knock off latch to stop the machine.
6. In a stop motion for package forming .ma-'
