SAMUEL STEARNS AND RUSSELL R. OGDEN, OF GLENS FALLS, NEW YORK; SAID OGDEN ASSIGNOR TO HENRY F. PEGK, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,304, dated June 19, 1877; application filed November 4,1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL STEARNS and Russian. R.OG-DEN,0f Glens Falls, in the county of Warren, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-W heels; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a water-wheel, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to de; scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our waterwheel, and Fig. 2 shows a section of the same.
A represents a wheel of any suitable dimension, provided on its periphery with a series of tapering buckets, B B, which may be either round, square, or of any number of sides.
In operation, when a jet of water from a hydrant or other source is directed and strikes the center at the bottom, its tendency is to spread and impinge against the inclined sides of the bucket, thereby producing a reacting force, which is an important advantage in giving a water-wheel the greatest percentage of power, or of using the water to the best possible advantage.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The conical pyramidal buckets B B, arranged on the periphery of the wheel A, for the purposes herein set forth.
