Description

A. sgKNNER.
LUBRIcAToR- Pagentdqune 12, 1377.
` INVENTOR .A236205 WITNESS-.ES
'ATTORN EYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT S. SKINNER, OF HASTING-S, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT iN` LuBYRlcAToRs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,025, dated June 12, 1877 application led April 28, 1877.
To all whom t may concern Beit known that I, ALBERT S. SKINNEE, of Hastings, in the county of Barry, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Lubricators; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draw i ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a partof this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lubricator, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the ,art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my lubricator. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the plug.
A represen ts the cistern or oil reservoir,whicl1 may be made of glass, so that the amount of oil can be seen at all times. This reservoir is screwed onto a boss projecting from the barrel of B the valve, from which also projects a hollow screw-stem, C, to be screwed into the steam-chest or-other'place desired to be lubricated. l
D is the usual tapering plug-valve having a longitudinal opening for the passage of the oil. vIn this case, however, a longitudinal partition, a, is left in the center of said opening, so that instead of an opening through the plug there is a chamber, b, on each side, the two chalnbers being directly opposite each other.
` This construction allows the oil to settle and till one chamber, b, when the plug can be turned over and the oil emptied while the other chamber is filling, by which means any amount of oil may be fed to a cylinder or journal by turning the plug one or more times.
In the top of the reservoir A is formed a mouth, d, the interior of which is tapering and formed with female screw-threads.
In this mouth is screwed a plug, G, provided with a suitable handle, G.
The screw-plug G is made hollow from the lower end upward for a suitable distance, and this hollow portion has two or more longitudinal slots, t', which are cut therein for the double purpose of giving vent to the reservoir, and also for tightening the` cap or plug when screwed in, so that it cannot come loose by jarring. As the plug G is screwed into the mouth the tapering oritice thereof causes the slotted portion of the plug to contract and bind tightly.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The screw-plug G, hollow at its lower end, and provided with longitudinal slots i t', in combination with the tapering month d, having interior screw-threads, whereby vent is given to the reservoir, and the plug is prevented from becoming loose or disengaged by jarring, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the reservoir A, open at both ends, and provided with screw-threads in each opening, the removable screw-plug Gr, with slots i t', and the removable barrel B, having tapering plug-valve D, with partition a, and hollow screw-stem C, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of March, 1877.
ALBERT S. SKINNER.
