Description
J. c. GLENN 1,919,506
WATER HEATER July 25, 1933.
Filed Nov. 23, 1931 Patented .uly 25, 1933 JOHN e. GLENN, or
p CHICAGO, ILLINOIS WATER HEATER The general object of my invention is tok provide a water heaterl which is simple inconstruction and efficient in operation.
-A more particular object of the invention is to provide a heater consisting of superposed conical coils with unitary means for connecting` the coils in series Vand prevent'- ing the heating gases from passing through the space at the centers of the coils.
A further object of the invention is to pro` vide a water heater composed of superposed conical coils with header means connecting the coils in series, and having` therein the inlet and outlet connections for the heater.
Another object is to provide .a heater of the class described with means for preventing the trapping of air within the coils when the heater is being filled with water. i
Referring to the drawing, the figure shows a vertical section of my improved form of heater. y i
In the drawing, the heater is shown as consisting' of four superposed overlapping.
--2-5- conical coils1, 2, 3, and 4- In the S1030@ 2113 the center of the coils in the upper part thereof is 1located a header generally desig-L nated as l5.
Inlet compartment 10 is provided wlth a heater inlet opening 13 located 'in the rear `face of the header and coil connection opening 14 located in the front face of the header and adjacent the inlet of coil 1. "The interf s mediatecompartment 11 is provided with coil connecting openings 15 and 16 the latter being located adjacent the upper ends of coils 2 and 3 respectively. .The outlet compartment 12 of section 6 of the header is provided with an opening 17 in its lowerface for receiving the outlet of coil 4 and the v Application filed Novemberv23, 1931. -SeriaI-No. 576,823.
opening'18-in its upper face for connection wlth a delivery pipe.
making thetubes themselves act as baliies. s Y
Upper end of coil 3 is connected' tothe headver at the opening 16.4 Coill is provided with an extension 21 leading from thetop convolution thereof to opening 17`of the header;V V
The operation of the device is as follows:
-Water enters the inlet compartment of the header` at opening 13, andpasses through inletof coilV 1. The water passes downwardthen into coil 3, in which it lowsdownwardly. From coil 3, the water :flowsAi into 'the lower part of coil- 4 and Vthence tothe outlet compartment of the header. Y
y It will be noted that in my heater, the' ysaid compartment through opening 14 tothe y header connects withV the top of each coil.
This arrangement readilylends itself to the elimination of air from the coils whenthe heater is first filled withwater as Vthe air in each coil will rise to the header compartments.,v In order to allow air toy escape from the inlet and intermediate compartments to the heater outlet kI provide small vent holes 22 in the partitions 8 and A9.
Various modifications may be 'made without departingfrom the invention. as Vdefined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a water heater, a plurality of super- `posed* overlapping conical coils, said coils being connected into pairs at their lower ends, each pair having an inlet and outlet, a Y header extending into'the space in thev center 7 of said coils, partitionsinV said header dividif* ing its interior into a plurality of separate chambers, said cham an inlet and outlet for each of bers, the inlet of one ofsaicl pairs of coils being connected to the outlet of one 5 of said chambers, the outlet of said pair being connected to the inlet of another chainber, the o communie of coils.
utlet of said last named chamber ating with another of 'said pairs vent hole in each of the partitions for alloW-.
ing air to escape from the Various chambers to the heater outlet.
JOHN o. GLENN.
