FOLDABLE TABLE Filed April 22. 1931 INVENTOR Patented July 11, 1933 TES PATEN srGMuNmKANc ER-z, F MA SPETI-I, NEW YORK f FoLnaB E TABLE 7 Application fi1ed-April '22,
This invention relates to improvements in folding or collapsible tables, and it is the principal object-0f my invention to provide a table that may convenientlybe folded into a comparativelysmall and compact parcel whereby the table plate forms parts of a case in whichthe table can be conveniently carried and in which ample space is left for allowing the storage of other articlessuch as for 1Q instance foldable chairs. r Another object of my invention :is theprovision of a collapsible table, all elements of which are firmly connected so as to form when set up as such a table of great strength securely supported at a convenient distance from the ground, yet allowing a ready collapsing.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a collapsible table readily convertible into a hat-box like structure conveniently to carry without by its outer appearance betraying its use as a table.
Astill further object of my invention is the provision of a collapsible table of com- 25 paratively simple, and inexpensive structure,
yet durable and efficient in operation.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known 0 as the description thereof proceeds and will i then be specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a folding or collapsible table constructed according to my invention, set up as table.
' Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the table plate in its unfolded position seen along line 40 22 of Figure 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a slottedside bar and parts co-operating therewith. Fig. a shows the table when collapsed representing a boX- or case-like structure.
Fig. 5is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 4:. Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the table top supporting members.
As illustrated, the trunk consists of two parts 10 and 11, and a center part 12 to which 50 the inner edges of the trunk are jointed or 193i. Serial No. 531,903;
hinged, as at 13, to allow aconvenient closing of the trunk or box.
On plate 12 are arranged four upright pins '13 about which thefour bars 14, 15, 16, and 17 are turned intermediate their ends;
In their table plhte supporting position as shown in- Figure 2,'these bars engage with ea-1c;
their inner'ends' in channel irons 18, 19, transversely arrangedonthe lower face of part 12, while their outer ends engage loops 20 on" the lower a The irons l8,,19,,support L-i rons 21,22, held, at their ends by the bolts 13 to channel irons 18,19. .The bars '21, 2.2, are; provided with longitudinally extendingslots 23near one of their ends of a transverse rod 2 1 connecting the outer ends of parallel bars '25, theinner ends of which are pivotally. connected to the flanges 26, 27, of a plate 28.
To thesefianges are also pivotally connected the inner ends of parallel bars, 29, 30, the outer ends of which are connected by means of prongs 31 to the non-slotted ends of bars face ofthe parts-10 and 11 of the 21, 22, which for this purpose have holes to;
allow a removable engagement of prongs 31.
Intermediate their ends bars 29, 30, are connected by a bar 32 loosely guided with its ends in bars 29 and and having a spring 33 wound about its part between bars 29, 30,1
tending to normally press the prongs into the holes in bars 21, 22.
A central bar 3 1 having a head 35- 'engaging plate 29 has slidably guided therein a sleeve 36 carrying a bracket 37, to the arms".
of which are pivotally attached the inner ends of legs 38, the outer ends of which show feet 39. The box or trunk 10 has a handle 10 and snap locks 41 holding the parts in their closed position over the table folded thereinJj" 1 As shown in Figure 5,. spaces 12, 43, are
provided for storing folding chairs or the like within the closed boX.
In operation, if it is desired to fold the table, bars 14, 15, 16, 17, are released from I their holders 20 by turning them about their pivot point 13 so as to engage under bars 21,
' 22, then prongs 31 are released from engage ment with bars 29, 80. Bars 25, 26, and 25:, 30 are pivotally connected at their inner;
ends, as at 44, 45, respectively to the flanges of plate 28.
Y. The legs 38 having been previously folded against stem 34 are prevented from spreading by a bracket 46 and are in their folded position together with stem 34 drawn inward laterally into the box while the pins 24 slide inwardly in slots 23 of bars 21, 22, so as to form a compact parcel 47.
It will be understood that I have disclosed one form of my invention as an example only, and that certain changes may be resorted to without departing from the'spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters said slots and at their inner ends pivotally secured to the flanges of said plate, a pair or other side bars, bolts on said last named side bars removably engaging the holes in said L-bars,and a spring controlled transverse bar having its ends loosely mounted in said last named side bars to allow a bringing together of said bars against the action of their spring for disengaging the bolts from said sidebars, the inner ends of said side bars also pivotally connected to the flanges of said plate.
2. In a collapsible table, a flanged plate, two pairs of parallel bars having their inner ends connected to the flanges of said plate, outwardly curved outer ends on said bars, L-irons having longitudinally extending slots near one of their ends, and a plurality olt'perforations at their other ends, prongs at the outer ends of said pairs of parallel bars adapted to engage, said perforations in the ends of said L-irons, a transverse rod guided with its ends'inthe longitudinal slots of said L-irons, a bar loosely guided with its ends in one pair of said parallel: bars, and a spring wound about said loosely guided bar between said parallel bars to press the prongs of said last-named bars into the perforations of said L-irons, means for supporting said plate, and two outer table Yplate members hingedly connected to an intermediate inner plate, and collapsible means to support said two outer plate members in theirextended position.
