JAIL LOCK Filed May 11, 1951 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 32 z :2 I] 5- I/QEIIMIIL INVENTOR ATTORNEY} and-is rotatable relative thereto, being held within it by means of an annular plate 19 that is held on the annular flange of the cylinder or barrel by means of screws 20, the plate fitting over the plug 8 and abutting against an annular shoulder 21 thereon. The provision of the annular plate 19 as a means for holding the plug 8 within the.
cylinder or barrel 14, permits the cylinder and plug to be handled as a unit without fear of disassembly thereof. This has the advantage of making it possible for the cylinder and plug members to be assembled as a" unit at the factory and then shipped to the point of use to be substituted for other units that have been removed from lock casings previously in use on a door. That is, in the event thata prisoner renders a lock useless by jamming or otherwise injuring the lock mechanism by driving something into the key opening of the plug, the cylinder and plug can be removed from the lock asa unit, a
' new unit substituted therefor, and the injured unit-returned to the place of manufacture for repair or renewal. The advantages of this feature will be obvious.
Suitable means are provided for confining the plug in the socket or recess. As shown,
' the cylinder or barrel 14 and plug 8 are confined in the socket or recessformed in the boss 13 by a washer 22 threaded into the outer end of the sleeve and dowelled vinto the cylinder or barrel by means of pins 24 extending through openings in thewasher and corresponding openings 25 in the cylin-,
der or barrel. The outermost ends of the pins 24may be ground off flush with the outer face of the washer after the parts are assembled, which prevents removal of the washer and other parts of the lock, except by an authorized person with proper equipment. Also, the diameter of the opening in washer 22 is such that independently of the plate 19 said washer also locks or confines the plug to its seat in the cylinder and cas- Plug 8 is provided witha cruciform key way or slot 26 for a key 27 having a ward portion of like cross section and whose wards 28 actuate tumbler levers 29 cooperating with --longitudinal grooves 30 in the cylinder or I barrel 14.
segments integrally connected at only one" end. Cap 32 is preferably countersunk and sleeved over the reduced end portions of such segments with a driving fit and is preferably secured in any suitable manner to each one thereof as, for instance, by the countersunk set screw 33., The cap is also provided with a "non-cir'cular'socket 34 to receive a like-shaped portion 35 of the key when the latter is fully inserted intothe keyway.
in the plug. H
With this arrangement, when thekey is pushed fully home, the tumblers are entirely" withdrawn from the cylinder slots into the plug, which is therefore free to-rotate in its'c linder. Also, the driving part 35 of the ey shank is non-circular as hereinbefore stated .and includes one rounded side 36 which cooperates with a rounded side 37 of the cap to prevent Qthe, key from being inserted in any but one position, as in the onthe key holes unavoidably register with the proper grooves of the cruciform keyslot of the plug. Such construction of the lock and key insuresequal distribution ofturningmovement to allparts ofthe plug and prevents any possibility ofbending or flexing of an individual segment orpart which might bind or. otherwise interfere with the action of the tumbler levers.
Referring tothe above, I have provided a lock thatis usually applied to that-side of a door which is out ofreach of'aprisoner to prevent his tampering with the ,lockyand which embodies numerous novel and advantageous features. The lock has beenso constructed that the cylinder. or barrel and plug as a unit may beremoved from the lock casing with comparative ease providing the proper tools are had. i This is dueto the fact that the. cylinder or barrel and plug have a substantially loose fit within the lock casing, beingheld against rotation therein by use of two pins and being held against endwiseremoval therefrom by the use of a washer that is 'ldowelled or otherwise secured,
in the casing and to the cylinder or. barrel.
Thus,,a lockhas been provided that may be easily repaired or replaced without undue time or expense;-
