The device operates in the following manner:
The brakes are applied in the usual manner by the engineer. When it is desired to release the brakes, the valve 17 which is normally closed is moved to position where its passage 18 is in alinement with the passage 16, releasing the air in the brake cylinders and thus releasing the brakes. Furthermore, by proper operation of the valve 17 the engineer may regulate the pressure retained in the brake cylinders as desired. 3
In installing the device, it is to be understood that the brake cylinder pressure pipe 31 is connected to the exhaust ports of the several triple valves by the pipes 35. Also it is to be understood that the several cut out cocks of the train line are open except the cock at the front of the locomotive, and the remote cock on the last car of the train.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the present invention provides an attachment for air brake systems, the use of which eliminates the necessity of retainer valves, and the several adjusting operations attendant the use thereof. Furthermore, the invention provides a device, the use of which gives to the engineer complete control of the braking operation of a train, and at the same the cylinder in communication with the small chamber, a pressure gauge mounted on the cylinder and in communication with the large chamber, a flange on the exterior of the cylinder for attachment to a supporting member, said partition having a passage extending therethrough for connecting the two chambers together, and a vertically arranged tapered passage intersecting the first passage and having its large end extending out through the top of the cylinder, a tapered valve member fitting in the tapered passage and having a port. therein for registering with the first passage when the valve is turned to a certain position, a handle connected to the upper end of the valve, and the lower end of the valve having a threaded shank passing through a hole in a part of the cylinder and a nut threaded on the shank for holding the valve in the tapered passage.
