This invention relates to packages, and more particularly to a package having a wrapper weakened by slits or perforations or both, on one end of the packa e, and a sealing strip adherin to the s1 of the package and the weakened portion of the wrapper and provided with a tab which may be grasped to tear away the weakened por- The main object of the invention is to obtain a wrapper-which may be readily opened to removethe contents of the package without destroylng the wrapper. With this and other ob ects not specifically mentioned in view, the invention consists in certain constructions and combinations hereinafter fully described and then specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawlng which forms a part of this specification and 1n which like characters of reference indicate the same or like parts,

In carrying the invention into effect, there is provided a wrapped package having its wrapper weakened adjacent one side of one end of the package, and a sealing strip adhering to the adjacent side of the package and to the weakened portion of the wrapper and provided with a tab which may be grasped to tear away the weakened portion of the wrapper. In the best constructions contemplated, the wrapper may be weakened by a pair of slits, or a shtand a line of perforations, or a single slit or a single line of perforations. The various means and parts may be widely varied within the scopeof the claims, for the particular forms of wrappers selected to illustrate the invention are but some of many possible concrete emageP, which is preferably a cigarette package, hasa wrapper C of cellophane or other similar material with side .folds "C" overlapping on the sides of the package. The portion of the wrapper over the top end of the package is weakened by lines of perforations A and B. A sealing strip S is secured to the wrapper C over one side of the package and the top of the package over the perforated lines A and B. The forward end of the strip S is preferably folded'over-on itself to form a tab F which may be grasped to tear loose the portion C of the wrapper between the lines A and B, as shown in Fig. 2. A suitable adhesive such as described in the reissue patent to F. W. Farrell, No. 17,760, granted Aug. 5, 1930, may be used to secure the strip S to the wrapper. This adhesive has the property of remaining tacky indefinitely so that after the piece C is torn away and the contents of the package partially removed, the strip S will readily ad here to the wrapper when it is again pressed down on the top of the package to seal the wrapper. 1
In Fig. 3 the wrapper is weakened by continuous slits A and B. Fig. 4 shows the wrapper weakened by a line of perforations A and a continuous slit B. The manner of weakening the wrapper in Fig. 5 is the form used in Figs. 1 and 2, and comprises two lines ofperforations 'A andB. Fig. 6 shows a wrapper weakened'by continuous slits A and B, the slit A being curved and having its ends adjacent the slit B. In Figs. 7 and 8 the line of perforations A is-also curved and extends to the slit B in Fig. 7 and the line of perforations B .in Fig. 8. Since the manner in which the wrapper is weakened in Figs. 1 to 8 causes it to tearopen only between the lines A and B, any
further pulling on the sealing strip S will pull it free from'the wrapper. But since it per to seal it the strip S will not ordinarily be removed from the wrapper.
The slits or perforations B may be omitted as in Figs. 9 to 12 so that the piece 0 will tear as far as the side folds C" of the wrapper or the corner of the package by pulling on the sealing strip S. In Figs. 9 and 11 the wrapper is shown as weakened by a slit A, the slit being curved in Fig. 11. A line of perforations A is used to weaken the wrapper in Figs. 10 and 12, and the line of perforations is curved in Fig. 12.
It will be noted that the end of the slits or line of perforations in Figs. 3 to 5, 9, and 10 extend inwardly toward the adjacent side of the package to cause the wrapper to tear in that direction. The same result is obtained by the curved slit or line of perforations in Figs. 6 to 8, 11, and 12.
In any of the various forms of constructions shown, the contents of the packages are rendered readily removable through the wrapper by merely pulling on the sealing strip S. I With a cigarette packagethe cigarettes may be easily removed through the opening in the wrapper formed by tearing loose the piece C without tearing open the entire top of the wrapper. The constructions shown in Figs. 1 to 8 are designed to close up the opening so formed in the wrapper by pressing down the sealingstrip on the top of the package, thereby sealing the wrapper. With the manner of weakening the wrapper shown in Figs. 9 to 12, the piece C may be torn off along the side folds C" when the sealing strip S is pulled, yet the piece C may be torn only as far as the corner of the package so that the strip S may be pressed down again on the top of the wrapper to seal it. By the practice of my invention it is apparent-that the contents of the package may be kept air-tight and moisture proof although the wrapper is opened from time to time to remove a portion of the con-.
tents of the package.
What isclaimed is: 1. A wrappedpackage-having its wrapper weakened on one end of the package, and
provided with a sealing strip coated with a.
non-drying adhesive and secured to a side of the package by means of said adhesive, said stri extending over and covering said weakene portion and adhering to the wrapper on said end by means of said adhesive," whereby the weakened portion of the wrapper is sealed and the' end of the sealing strip covering said weakened portion may be pulled to tear loose said weakened portion, and the openin so formed in the wrapper may be sealed y pressing the strip down again on said end to cover said opening and cause the strip to adhere again to the wrapper on said end.
2. A wrapped package having its wrapper weakened on one end of the package, and
provided with a sealing strip coated with a non-drying adhesive and secured to a side of the package by means of said adhesive, said strip extending over and covering said weakened portion and adhering to the wrapper on said end by means of said adhesive, whereby the weakened portion of the wrapper is sealed and the end of the sealing strip covering said weakened portion may be pulled to tear loose said weakened portion, and the opening so formed in the wrapper may be sealed by pressing the strip down again on said end to cover said opening and causethe strip to adhere again to the wrapper on said end, and said strip being provided with a tab on the end thereof extending over said weakened portion, said tab being formed by folding the end of the strip back under itself.
3. A wrapped package having its wrapper weakened on one end of the package, and provided with a sealing strip coated with a non-drying adhesive and secured to a side of the package by means of said adhesive, said I strip extending over and covering said Weakened portion and adhering to the wrapper on said end by means of said adhesive, whereby. the weakened portion of the wrapper is sealed and the end of the sealing strip covering said weakened portion may be pulled to tear loose said weakened portion, and the opening so formed in the wrapper may be sealed by pressing the strip down again on said end to cover said opening and cause the strip to adhere again to. the wrap r on said end, and said wrapper being wea ened by a plurality of slits.
4. A wrapped package having its wrapper weakened on one end of the-package, and provided with a. sealing strip coated with a nondrying adhesive and secured to a side of the package by means of said adhesive, said strip extending over and covering said weakened portion and adhering to the wrapper on said end by means of said adhesive, whereby the weakened portion of the wrapper is sealed and the end of the sealin strip covering said weakened portion may e pulled totear loose said weakened portion, and the opening so formed in the wrapper may be sealed by pressing the strip down again on said end to cover said opening and cause the strip toadhere again to the wrapper on said end, and said wrapper being weakened by a plurality of lines of perforations.
5. A wrapped package having its wrapper weakened on one end of the package, and provided with a sealing strip coated with a non-drying adhesive and secured to a side of the package by means of said adhesive, said strip extending over and covering said weakened portion andadhering to the wrapper on said end by means of said adhesive, whereby the weakened portion-of the wrapper is sealed and the end of the sealing strip covering said weakened portion may be pulled to tear loose said weakened portion, and the opening so formed in the wrapper may be sealed by pressing the strip to adhere again to the wrapper on said end, and said wrapper being weakened by a slit and an adjacent line of portion and adhering to the wrapper on saidend by means of said adhesive, whereby the weakened portion of the wrapper is sealed and the end of the sealing strip covering said weakened portion may bepulled to tear loose said weakened portion, and the opening so formed in the wrapper may be sealed by pressing the strip down again' on said end to cover said opening and cause the strip to adhere again to the wrapper on said end, and said wrapper being weakened by a slit having its ends extending towards the side of the package to which the sealing strip adheres.
7. A wrapped package having its wrapper weakened on one end of the package, and provided with a sealing strip coated with a non-drying adhesive and secured to a side of sealing strip adheres.
9. A wrapped package having its wrapper weakened on one end of the package, and pro- .vided with a sealing strip coated with a nondrying adhesive and secured to a side of the package bymeans of said adhesive, said strip wards the, side of the package to which the extending over and covering said weakened portion and adhering to the Wrapper on said end by means of said adhesive, whereby the weakened portion of the wrapper is sealed and the end of the sealing strip covering said weakened portion may be pulled to tear loose said weakened portion, and the opening so formed in the wrapper may be sealed by pressing the strip down again on said end to cover said opening and cause the strip to adhere again to the Wrapper on said end, and said wra per being weakened by a curved slit having its ends extending towards the side of the package to which the sealing strip adheres.
