My invention consists in providing control means for a winding machine such as is used with drag scrapers. My device consists of a winding machine of the well-known type,
automatic brakes for the drums of said winding machines and means for controlling the clutches which actuate both drums so that it is impossible that both drums be connected at the same time to the source of power.
An added feature of my invention is to provide a ships wheel for actuating the clutches of a winding machine.
For a more complete exposition of my invention reference may be had to the annexed drawing and specification at the end whereof my invention will be specifically pointed out and claimed.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a winding machine and a ships wheel controlling the clutches thereof.

There is disclosed a winding machine of the well-known type which is merely shown diagrammatically as this apparatus is well known. The winding machine consists essentially of a base 1. Mounted thereon are 0 winding drums 2 and 3. When the winding machine is operating, one of the drums is connected to a source of power so as to exert a pull on the cable which is attached thereto but not shown. The other end of the cable is attached to a drag scraper from whence a cable runs to the other drum. It will, therefore, be seen that the drums always turn in the same direction, one of the drums being connected to a source of power to tow the cable while the other drum runs loosely to pay off the cable. The drums are connected to the source of power by clutches or frictions 44 and 55 which may be of any well-known type. The clutches 44 and 55 are adapted to be operated or thrown into clutched or declutched position by the arms 4 and 5. On drums of large diameter much pressure is necessary to hold these clutches in engagement. Such pressure cannot be exerted by a simple lever and it is, therefore,

necessary to provide a series or linkage of levers to provide the necessary pressure. In order to prevent the drum, which is paying off cable and which is, therefore, disengaged from the source of power, from running too freely and, therefore, overrunning' or paying 0d the cable faster than it is wound up on the drum, which is doing the hauling, it is customary to provide a brake on the drun1 which is paying ofi cable. It is desirable, however, that the drum, which is doing the hauling, shall not be engaged by such a brake. There are, therefore, provided automatic brakes which .act to engage the drum when it is running in the direction to pay off cable and to disengage the drum when it is running in the direction to tow the cable. A suitable type of automatic brake, although other types may be employed, is disclosed in the patent to Hale 1,715,003, and in the patent to Beaumont 1,674,586. In the drawing these brakes are disclosed as brake bands 6 and 7, band 6 being disengaged from drum 2 which is doing the towing while band 7 is engaged to provide the desired amount of friction on drum 3 which is paying off cable.
In order that the necessary power to hold the clutches or frictions, which connect one of the drums with the source of power, may
be conveniently provided manually there is provided a series of levers. These levers are conveniently interlocked so that the clutch of one drum is disengaged when the clutch of the other drum is in engagement or both clutches may be disengaged. This is shown as consisting of links 8 and 9 which are connected to a cross-arm 10, the cross arm being fast on shaft 11. Shaft 11 is conveniently mounted in bearings in plate 12 or in any other suitable manner. There is also fast on shaft 11 segment 13 which is adapted to be turned by chain 14 from gear 15. Gear 15 is in turn adapted to be actuated from shaft 15 which is mounted in suitable bearings 17 and on which ships wheel 18 is nonrotatably mounted. Links 8 and 9 are connected to arms 4 and 5 respectively in such a manner that when one clutch is engaged the other clutch will be disengaged and that g both clutches may be simultaneously disen aged.
