June 20, 1933. J, T. SWEENEY SMOKERS PIPE Filed Oct. 5, 1951 m VENTOR B Y wan/awn 1 W 39% A TTORNE y Patented June 20, 1933 UNE'E'ED STATES JOE-IN 'l. SWEENEY, F KANSAS CITY, IYIISSOURI SMOKERS PIPE Application filed October 5, 1931.
My invention relates to improvements 1n smokers pipes.
One object of my invention is to provide a novel smokers pipe which has novel means for collecting spittle, thatpasses into the pipe stem, and for discharg ng the spittle so collected without its becoming intermingled with the tobacco in the bowl of the pipe. A further object of my invention is a novel ar rangement of smoke and water passages, which permits of a simple and cheap way of manufacturing the pipe, and which pre vides for a quick and thorough cleaning of r said passages.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed,
In the accompanying drawing which 1llustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
' Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved pipe.
2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Similar characters of reference designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates the main portion of the stem of the pipe which supports the bowl 2 and to one end of which is removably connected the mouthpiece 3 of the stem, the end of the mouthpiece nearest the bowl 2 having a recess in which is removably fitted the adjacent end of the main portion 1.
Through the mouthpiece 3 and main portion 1 longitudii'm-lly extends a smoke passage 4, which, at the side of the bowl 2 distant from the mouthpiece 3, has a chamber having a threaded outlet in which is removably fitted a threaded closure 6. The smoke passage has a portion 7 discharging into the chamber 5 and connnunicating at its inlet end with the bowl 2 near the bottom thereof and at the side thereof distant from the mouthpiece 3.
The main portion 1 of the stem, below the bowl 2 and intermediate of the chamber 5 and the mouthpiece 3 and below the passage 4 is provided with a. water receptacle 8 adapted to receive and hold spittle, and which at its bottom is provided with a threaded outlet in Serial No. 566,917.
which is removahly fitted a threaded closure 9.
Leading upwardly in the portion 1 from the receptacle 8 toward the mouthpiece 3 and communicating with the smoke passage 4 is a water passage 10.
Leading upwardly in the opposite direction from the receptacle 8 and communicating with the chamber 5 at the bottom thereof is another water passage 11.
The location of the chamber 5 and water receptacle 8 in the positions shown in Fig. 2, enables the portions 4 and 7 of the smoke passage and the passages and 11 to be read ily drilled in the manufacture of the pipe. Such arrangement of the passages 4, 7, 10 and 11 and chamber 5 and receptacle 8 permit the ready and thorough cleaning of said passages, chamber and receptacle when the closures 6 and 9 are removed.
Spittle which may flow from the mouthpiece 3 through the passage 4 and into the chamber 5 will pass through the passages 10 and 11 into the receptacle 8. And small bits of tobacco which may pass into the chamber 5 through the passage 7 from the bowl 2 will be held in the chamber 5 from which they may be readily removed by removing the clo sure 6. Thus a clear passage for the smoke from the bowl 2 will be had, and no spittle will pass into the bowl, which will remain dry, and much of the usual disagreeable odor common to smokers pipes will be eliminated. It will be noted that the bottoms of the passages 7 and 11 and the chamber 5 are lower at all points between the inlet end of the smoke passage 7 and the water receptacle 8 than said'inlet end, whereby no spittle will pass through the smoke passage into the bowl but will all How into the water receptacle 8.
Modifications of my invention, within the scope of the app nded claims, may be made without departing from the spirit thereof.
What I claim is 1. A smokers pipe having a bowl and a stem, said stem comprising a main portion and a mouthpiece, said stem having a smoke passage extending through said mouthpiece and said main portion and communicating we with said bowl at the side of the latter distantfrom said mouthpiece, said passage having a chamber at the side of said bowl which is distant from said mouthpiece, said chamber having an outlet and a removable closure for said outlet, said main portion of said stem having below said smoke passage and between said chamber and said mouthpiece an outlet for water and a removable closure for the last named outlet, said main portion of said stem having a water passage connecting said smoke passage with said water outlet.
2. A smokers pipe having a bowl and a stem, said stem comprising a main portion and a mouthpiece, said stem having a smoke passage extending through said mouthpiece and said main portion and communicating with said bowl at the side of the latter distant from said mouthpiece, said passage having a chamber at the side of the bowl distant from said mouthpiece, said chamber having an outlet and a removable closure for said outlet, said main portion having below said passage and between said chamber and said mouthpiece an outlet for water and a removable closure for the last named outlet, said main portion having a water passage communicating with said water outlet and communicating with said chamber.
3. A smokers pipe having a bowl and a stem, said stem comprising a main portion and a mouthpiece, said stem having a smoke passage extending through said mouthpiece and said main portion and communicating with said bowl at the side thereof distant from said mouthpiece, said passage having a chamber at the side of said bowl distant from said mouthpiece, said chamber having an outlet and a removable closure for said outlet, said main portion having below said passage a water outlet and a removable closure for said last named outlet, said main portion having two water passages one of which extends in one direction from said water outlet to said chamber and the other of which extends in the opposite direction toward said mouthpiece and communicates with said smoke passage.
4. A smokers pipe having a bowl and a stem, said stem having a smoke passage thcrethrough communicating at its inlet end with said bowl, said stem having below said smoke passage a water outlet provided with a removable closure, said stem having a water passage connecting said smoke passage with said water outlet, said water passage extending downwardly from its inlet end to said water outlet.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN T. SWEENEY.
