This invention relates to presses for paper machinery, and more particularly to a press construction of such character that the bottom press roll thereof ismade readily in dependently removable from the press. I I
r In the ordinary press construction, in order to remove the bottom press roll, itis essential either that the upper press roll be first removed or a carriage mechanism employed which will enable the lower press roll to be shifted in the general direction ofits axis to a point where it is accessible to a sling. Obviously, either of theseimethods is time consuming and requires the services of a number of workmen in accomplishing the remov al; the time elementinvolving a corresponding loss ofproductionby themachine. A An important object of this invention is the provisionof, anarrangement such that two mechanics, one working at each end of the press, can accomplish all preliminary work in positioning the roll where it is readily accessible for removal by the sling.
1 A further and morespecific object Of the invention is the provision ofan arrangement such that the lowerpr'essrollmay be moved bodily longitudinally of the machine bed. when so desiredwith comparatively slight exertion on the part of the attendants.

At the opposite sideof the press roll 14 from the standard 11, standards 15 are employed for supporting a cross-walk 16,this cross-walk being ordinarily disposed in fixed position with relation to the standards 15 which support the same. r
In accordance with my invention, I provide bases 17 for the bearings 18 of the lower press roll 14, these bases being seated upon ongitudinally-extending, longitudinally fiat ledges 19 forming a portion of the upper surface of the frame member 10. Each bearing baseis in the form of a hollow, preferably open, bottom frame having closed ends 20 formed with cars 21 for the passage of location pins 22 whereby the bearing base may be disposed in proper position upon the frame during operation of the machine.
Each bearing basemounts a pair of shafts 23having eccentrically formed portions 24 disposed interiorly of the hollow base. Upon these eccentric portions are mounted rollers 25.. The outer end of each shaft is squared, or otherwise adapted, as at 26, for the reception of a wrench Or tool whereby it may be rotated to move the rollers into and lie the cross-walk 16. The crosswalk is, ac-
cordingly, mounted upon arms 28, and these arms 28are pivoted at 29 upon the upper ends at of the standards 15 so that the cross-walks may be vertically positioned as indicated in dotted lines, leaving a clear passage for the sling and the press roll 14 when supported thereby.

I claim:
1. In a press for paper-making machines, spaced frame members, roll supporting elements mounted thereon, anti-friction members permanently associated with one of the frame members and supporting element at each side of the press, and means to interpose the anti-friction means between the frame member and roll supporting element.
2. In a press, a frame supporting upper and lower press rolls, said frame comprising means for guiding and supporting the lower press roll during movement thereof longi tudinally of the press from a position where it underlies the upper press roll to a position where it vertically clears the upper press roll.
3. In a press, spaced frame elements, a lower roll. supported therefrom, standards arising from said frame elements at corresponding ends thereof, an upper press roll carried by.
the standards and overlying the lower press roll, said frame elements including longitudinallyextending supporting surfaces along which the lower press roll may be moved to a position where it vertically clears the upper roll.
4. In a press, spaced frame elements, alower roll supported therefrom, standards arising from said frame element-s at corresponding ends thereof, an upper press roll carried by the standards and overlying the lower press roll, said frame elements including longitudinally-extending supporting surfaces along which the lower press roll may be moved to a position where it vertically clears the upper roll, a cross-walk, and means at the opposite ends of the frame elements supporting the cross-walk for movement from a position where it overlies the lower press roll when cleared of the upper press roll to a position where it vertically clears the lower press roll when in such position.
5. Ina press including the usual upper and lower rolls, frame elements and bearing supports for said lower press roll mounted on said frame elements and movable therealong from positions where the lower press roll underlies the upper press roll to positions where the lower press roll vertically clears the upper press roll. 6. In a press including the usual upper and lower rolls, frame elements and bearing supports for said lower press roll mounted on said frame elements and movable therealong from positions where the lower press roll underlies the upper press roll to positions where the lower press roll vertically clears the upper press roll, and means to insert anti-friction elements between the frame elements and bearing supports.
7. In a press including the usual upper and lower rolls, frame elements and bearing supports for said lower press roll mounted on said frame elements and movable therealong from positions where the lower press roll underlies the upper press roll to positions where the lower press roll vertically clears the upper press roll, anti-friction elements permanently associated with one of the bearing support and frame elements at each end of the press roll and means to move said anti-friction elements into and out of positions where they support the bearing supports from the frame elements.
8. In a press including the usual upper and lower rolls, frame elements and bearing supports for said lower press roll mounted on said frame elements and movable therealong from positions where the lower press roll underlies the upper press roll to positions where the lower press roll vertically clears the upper press roll, anti-friction elements associated with the frame element and bearing support at each end of the roll and eccentric means for moving said anti-friction elements into supporting engagement with the bearing supports. 1
9. In a press including the usual upper and lower rolls, frame elements and bearing supports for said lower press roll mounted on said frame elements and movable therealong from positions where the lower press roll underlies the upper press roll to positions where the lower press roll vertically clears the upper press roll, anti-friction elements mounted for vertical movement in said bearing supports from positions where they lie within the limits of the bearing supports to positions where they engage the frame to support the bearing support therefrom, and means to vertically move said anti-friction elements.
10. In a press including the usual upper and lower rolls, frame elements and bearing supports for said lower press roll mounted on said frame elements and movable therealong from positions where the lower press roll underlies the upper press roll to positions where the lower press roll vertically clears the upper press roll, shafts rotatably mounted in said bearing supports and having eccentric portions and anti-friction elements rotatably mounted upon said eccentric portions adapted to engage the frame and support the bearing supports therefrom in predetermined positions of said shafts.
11. In a press including usual upper and lower rolls, frame elements and bearing supports for said lower press roll mounted on said frame elements and movable there-along from positions where the lower press roll underlies the upper press roll to positions where the lower press roll vertically clears the upper press roll, anti-friction elements permanently associated with one of the bearing support and frame elements at each-end of the press roll, means to move said antifriction elements into and out of positions Where they support the bearing supports from the frame elements, and means for locking said anti-friction elements in roll supporting position.
12. In a press including the usual upper and lower rolls, frameelements and bearing supports for said lower press roll mounted on said frame elements and movable therealong from positions where the lower press roll underlies the upper press roll to positions where the lower press roll vertically clears the upper press roll, anti-friction elements associated with the frame element and bearing support at each end of the roll,
eccentric means for moving said anti-friction elements into supporting engagement with the bearing supports, and means for looking said eccentrics in positions with said anti-friction elements supporting the rolls. 13. In a press including the usual upper and lower rolls, frame elements and bear ing supports for said lower press roll mounted on said frame elements and movable therealong from positions where the lower press roll underlies the upper press roll to positions where the lower press roll vertically clears the upper press roll,antifriction elements mounted for vertical movement in said bearing supports from positions where they lie within the limits of the bearing supports to positions where they engage the frame to support the bearing support therefrom, means toverticallyl move said anti-friction elements, and means for locking said antifriction elements in their supporting position.
14. In a press including the usual upper and lower rolls, frame elements and bearing supports for said lower press roll mounted on said frame elements and movable therealong from positions where the lower press roll underlies the upper press roll to positions where the lower press roll vertically clears the upper press roll, shafts rotatably mounted in said bearing supports and having eccentric portions and anti-friction elements rotatably mounted upon said eccentric portions adapted to engage the frame and support the bearing supports therefrom in predetermined positions of said shafts, and means for locking said eccentric portions in positions where said anti-friction elements support the bearing supports.
