This invention relates to a toy and will be described as incorporated in a derrick includ-V ing an electric hoist and means associated therewith for actuating'the same.
An object of this invention is the provision of a device ofthe class identified which is adapted to be moved about and actuated by a small child .and which is adapted to raise and lower pieces of metal and the like by means of a magnetic hoist.
Another object of this invention is the provision of such a device including an electric hoist and a source of electric energy incorporated in the body of the toy, such that it may be moved about independently of any external source of electric supply and be actuated without danger of electric shock to the operator.
A further object of this invention is the provision of such a toy which is an independent unitary device and which is simple of con-V struction and economical to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following detail description with reference to the Iaccompanying drawings.

The construction shown .in the drawings for the purpose of illustrating my invention r comprises a cab-like'body 5 pivotally mount- 0 ed by a bolt 6 to a chassis 7 including a pressed 1932. Serial No. 611,953.

The cab-like body consists of al rear wall 12, a front wall 13, sidewalls 14 andbottom` 15 and a top 16.V The top 16 is preferably curved over the bodyengaging the upper edges of `the sides at 17 where it is preferablyV secured as by spot welding.V The side and ends of the body may be provided with window and door openings 21 and 22 particular# ly for ornamental purposes. To the front, wall of the body is secured a boom '24' which is mounted on a crosssshaft25 which passes through a U-shaped bracket 26 lprefr-zrably 65 welded to the front wall of the body 13`as at 27 and 28. The boom'24 preferably. .coni sists of two side members 29 `'and 31 which are held in spaced relation at' one end by the bracket 26 to which itis pivoted by the shaft 25, and at the other end by a'bolt 33 on which is journalled alpulley'34. .A'hoist 35 com-v prising an electromagnet which consists, ofa core 36 vhavingfdisposed therearound armagnetic coil 37 and a metal band 38. The hoist 75 is adapted to be raised and lowered by cable 41 attachedat 42 tothevupper end of the core 36, and'trained over the-pulley-34. The opposite end of the cable 41 is preferably wound on the ratchet shaft 43 which is journalled in the side members 29 and 31 ofthe boom 24. lThe shaft 443 is provided at one end with an integrally formed crank 45 for actuating the same. Adjacent the opposite end of4 the shaft 43 and fixed thereon for ro- 85 tation therewith is a ratchet wheel 46 having Y teeth Vadapted forV engagement with the forward end of a spring plate 47 which is fixed to theV forward edge of. the bracket 26 as shown at 48 in Figure 1. The boomv24 is normally,l held in the position shown in Figure 1 by a rod 49 having hooked engagement with the boom and with the body respectively at 51 and 52. For the purpose of energizing the electric coil 37 I have provided a battery 54 electrically connected with conductors 55, 56 and 57 which form a circuit fromthe battery to the coil and back to the battery. Adjacent ends of the conductors and 57 are secured to binding posts 58 and 59. The binding post 59 is preferably insulated from the side of the body as by insulating members 61. A switch member 62 is mounted on one end of the binding post 58 and is adapted to be oscillated thereon between stop members 63 and 64 which limit Vthe movement of the switch memberV in its on and off position. VThe switch member 62 is preferably formed of spring metal and may be pressed over the head of the binding post 59 and held thereon by frictional engagement there,- with. A coil spring 72 is preferably se'- cured to the switch 62 for yieldingly holding it in the off position and prevent its accidental movement to the on position for preventing the dissipation of electric energy from the battery 54.
' The battery 54 is supported adjacent the stop 16 by .a sheath 75 preferably spotwelded or otherwise secured to the top. Forwardly ofthe sheath 75 is disposed an angle plate 7 6'having binding posts 77 and 78 thereon preferably insulated from the plate 76. Conductors 55 and 56 are secured to thebinding posts for receiving electric energy through the same from the terminals 79'and 81.0f the battery 54.
' Adjacent the rearward end of the battery 54 is disposed an angle plate 82 having a depending portion engaging the rear end of the battery 54 and having a horizontal p ortion 83 engaging the lower side of the top 16 and being releasably secured thereto by rivets 84 fixed to the plate 82 and movable in the slots 85 and 86 for releasing the plate from its normal position engaging the battery and permitting the battery to be withdrawn rearwardly from the sheath 7 5 when desired for the purpose of replacing it with a new batterv when exhausted. Y
In the operation of my improved toy, the entire device may be. moved on the wheels 9 and the body may be rotated about the pivot 6 in order to place the boom in any desired position. kThe electromagnetic hoist 35 may be raised and lowered by rotation of the crank 45. When the hoist is raised. the ratchetV wheel 26. will hold it in any position, but in order to lower the hoist 35 it is necessary to raise the ratchet spring 47 to allow reverse movement of the wheel 46. When it is desired to attach the hoist 35 to hold a metal article for raising the same, it is only necessary to touch the hoist 35 against the metal article and close the switch 62 in a manner that it bridges the space between the binding posts 58 and 59 thereby completing the electric circuit through the coil 37 and the battery 54. The metal article which may be supported by the hoist 35 is automatically removed Vtherefrom by breaking the electric circuit. The coil spring 72 is adapted to normally hold the switch r62vin its off position to prevent the dissipation of electric energy from the battery 54.
The modification of my invention shown in Figures 4 to 7 inclusive is in most respects identical with that shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, and insofar as thetwo structures are identical, similar reference characters are applied thereto. Provision is made in this form of my invention, for the rotation of the body 5 about a bolt 88 as an axis, by the rotation of a crank rod 89 by means of an offset handle portion 99 adjacent the upper end of the rod. The lower end of the crank rod 89 extends into a pinion 91 which is preferably formed integrally withy the hub portion 92 which seats on the bottom 15 of the body with vthe pinion 91 extending through the bottom 15 and engaging teeth 93 on the ring gear 94. A pin 95 extends through the rod 89 at a point adjacent the bottom of the rod, and is seated in a slot 96 in the hub 92, to impart rotary force to the hub and the pinion 91, when rotary force is applied to the crank 90 on the upper end of the rod 89. f
The ring gear 94 is rigidly secured to the top of the frame 8 by bolts or rivets 96. When it is desired to rotate the body in a horizontal plane relative to the chassis 7, it is only necessary to rotate the rod 89 by means of the handle 90, which in turn rotates the pinion 91 engaging teeth on the ring gear 94. As the ring gear 94 is rigidly secured to the frame 8, rotation of the pinion 91 causes the pinion to move around the edge of thering gear, forcing the body toy rotate about -the bolt 88 as an axis, while the bottom 15 slides around on the upper surface of the ring gear 94, forming in effect a fifth wheel action. The spring 98 on the bolt 88, interposed between the nut 99 and the frame 8 causes the head of the bolt to draw downwardly on the bottom 15 of the body, thereby holding the body snugly upon the ring gear 94 during its rotary movement.
From the foregoing'A description it will be appreciated that my invention is susceptible of modification without departing from the principles of the invention and I desire that the patent to be granted hereon shall not be limited in any manner except as required by the prior art.
I claim as my invention 1. In a toy of the class described, a cab-like body including sides and a top, an electromagnetic hoist operably connected to said body, an electric battery connected to said magnet for energizing the same, mounting means for said battery adjacent the top of the body, limit means fixed to the top of the body vforwardly of said mounting means for limiting forward movement of the battery, and means removably attached to the top adjacent the rear of the battery for preventing accidental removal of the battery.
2. In a toy of the class described, a cablike body including sides and a top, an electromagnetic hoist operably connected to said body, an electric battery connected to said magnet for energizing the same, mounting means for said battery comprising a sheath fixed to the top of said body, and means for restraining the movement of the battery longitudinally of said sheath.
3. In a toy of the class describeda cablile body including sides and a top, an electromagnetic hoist operably connected to said body, an electric battery connected to said magnet for energizing the same, mounting means for said battery comprising a sheath fixed to the top of said body, means fixed to the top of said body forwardly of said sheath for limiting movement of the battery forwardly, and an angle plate removably attached to said top adjacent the rear end of said sheath and including a portion engaging the rear end of the battery to prevent accidental removal of the same.
4. In a toy of the class described, a frame, a body pivotally mounted on said frame, a boom fixed to said body for swinging movement therewith, a hoist suspended from said boom, said hoist comprising an electromagnet, a source of electric energy having connection with said electromagnet for energizin the same, and cooperating means on said ody and on said chassis for effecting rotary movement of the body relative to the chassis, said cooperating mechanism including a pinion, an enlarged cylindrical portion on one end of said pinion forming a shoulder resting on the floor of said body, said cylindrical portion having a diametrical groove therethrough, a crank including a vertical crank rod for actuating said pinion, a
transverse pin in said crank rod removably seated in the groove in said cylindrical portion for transmitting rotary movement to said pinion upon rotation of said crank.
5. In a toy of the class described, a frame, a body pivotally mounted on said frame, a boom fixed to said body for swinging movement therewith, a hoist suspended from said boom, means for vertically raising and lowering said hoist relative to said boom, and cooperating pinion and gear mechanism operably connecting the body to the chassis and a handle extending through the top' of the body whereby said mechanism may be actuated to cause relative movement of the body and chassis.
6. In a toy of the class described, a cablike body including sides and a top, an electromagnetic hoist operably connected to said body, an electric battery connected to said magnet for energizing the same, mounting` means for said battery adjacent the top of the body, limit means fixed to the top of the body forwardly of said mounting means for limiting forward movement of the battery,
and means removably attached to the top adjacent the rear of the battery for preventing accidental removal of the battery, said limit means including an electric contact element electrically connected to the battery and to said magnet. p
7. In a toy of the class described, a cablike body including sides and a top, an electromagnetic hoist operably connected to said body, an electricbattery connected to said magnet for energizing the same, mounting means for said battery comprising a sheath fixed to the top of said body, and means for restraining the movement of the battery longitudinally of said sheath, said restraining means comprising a contact plate fixed to said top forwardly of the sheath and an abutment element releasably secured to said top rearwardly of said sheath.
