This invention relates to stoppers for bottles, jars and similar receptacles, and it has reference more particularly to stoppers made from compressible material like cork.
5 Ordinarily cork bottle stoppers are apt to become dislodged incident to shaking of the contents of the bottles, the foregoing being especially true when the contents are of an oily orslippe nature and prevent the m stoppers from ta 'ng efiective hold upon the insides of the bottle necks.
The object of my invention-is to precludethe possibility of the contingency above pointed out; and this desideratum I attain as hereinafter fully explained through provision on the stopper of a lateral pin projection adapted to engage with an internal circumferential groove within the neck of the bottle, thereby to positively hold the stopper in place with the latter in leak-tight circumferential compression.

The bottle chosen for convenience of illustration herein has a square body 3, and a reduced cylindric neck 4 centrally of its top. The stopper indicated at 5 is of the slightly tapered type, and, it is to be understocii, made of a compressible material like cor I In adapting such a stopper 5 to the purposes of my invention, I run diametrically through it, a pin 6 of such length as to provide a lateral lug projection 7 beyond said stopper at one side. As shown, I force the head 8 of the pin 6 somewhat into the stopper 5 so that it may serve as an anchorage to secure said pin against displacement. In order to adapt the bottle 3 for use of a stopper 5 modified as just explained, I form the neck 4 of said bottle with a series of internal grooves for selective engagement by the lug 7 of the stopper 5, there being in the present instance t ree such grooves indi cated respectively by the numerals 9, 10 and 11, said grooves being accessible by way of an entrant notch 12 extending downward from the mouth of the bottle neck 4 to the lowermost groove 11. i V V Incident to' initial application of the stopper. 5, the lug projection? is registered with the notch 12 in the=bottle neck 4 and the stopper 5 forced'in'until its lug 7 registers with' thev first. groove 9 of the series 911;' The stopper 5 is thereupon turned inone direction or the other to bring the lug 7 into the groove 9. Having thus described my invention, I claim a series of internal circumferential-grooves spaced longitudinally in the neck thereof, of a stopper made from compressible material like cork and having a lateral lugprojection adapted to engage either of said internal circumferential-grooves in the bottle neck for positive retainment of the stopper against accidental dislodgment, the said 1 grooves having an entrant notch downward from the bottle mouth for passage of the projection on the stopper incident toapplication of the latter.

The combination with a bottle having a series of internal circumferential-grooves spaced longitudinally in the neck thereof, of a stopper made from compressible material like cork and having a pin run diametrically therethrough with provision of a lug projection, beyond the stopper at one side, adapted to en age either of said internal circumferentia -grooves in the bottle neck for positive retainment of the stopper against accidental dislodgment, the said grooves having an entrant notch downward from the mouth of the bottle for passage of 110.6 I
