Description

May 23, 1933. DlGEL 1,909,932
WEAPON Filed May 20. 1931 INVENTOR Patented May 23, 1933 UNITED STATES EUGENE DIGEL, OF LEONARDO, NEW JERSEY I WEAPON Application filed May 20, 1931.
This invention relates to weapons in general, and particularly to clubs for policemens use.
The prime object of this invention is to i provide a handy, readily available club,
which, while not in use, will occupy a minimum space within a. pocket, or the like, and which will automatically become an effective instrument when brought, by swinging it,
into operative position and which will remain during use in that position, and which may be brought with ease again into inoperative position when desired.
Another object of my invention is to so con- 15 struct the device. as to permit its handling, prior to and while being used, without fear of losing full control over it.
The foregoing and still other objects will become more fully apparent from the fol- 0 lowing description, and the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, but by no means intended to limit my invention to the actual showing, and in which Fig. 1 is a partial cross sectional view through a preferred form of my device in inoperative position, and
Fig. 2 is a similar illustration of my device in operative position, with the handle part turned 90 degrees.
Referring now to the figures, numeral denotes a handle, made either of wood, plastic molded material or metal, provided with a conical or tapered hole 11. Within the hole is telescopingly and operatively mounted a resilient member 12, made preferably of a closely wound steel spring, and so constructed that the end portion 13 of the member is enlarged, tapered or shaped conically so as to correspond in taper to the form of hole 12, while the outer end of the spring member is cylindrical.
The end of the handle at which terminates the smaller end of the hole 11 is provided with a bezel or bushing 14, firmly secured to the 45 handle and adapted to prevent splitting thereof. At the opposite end of the handle is provided a. pin 15 or any other means for securing thereto a looped strap 16 intended to be slung about the wristwhen the device is to be brought into operation. To the outer end of Serial No. 538,792..
resilient member 12 is attached a lead ball 17. Both the handle and the ball are covered with leather enclosures indicated at 18 and 19,'respectively.
WVhen the club is not in use, resilient memher 12 is pushed into conical hole 11 so that ball 17 abuts with bushing 14*, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1. In the event the club is to be used, the hand is passed through strap 16 until the latter engages the wrist, the hand grips the handle and the device is swung in an are. This swinging movement propels the ball and resilient member 12 until the conical end 13 of the latter engages the reduced end of hole 11', thereby checking the further out ward movement of member 12.
The wedging or friction engagement between the handle hole and the resilient member is so thorough that member 12 will never 7 recede from its extended position while the club is in use, and in order to bring the device to its collapsed position, pressure must be BXTlit-Btl against ball 17 while the handle is he c.
While I have shown and described a specific form of my device, it is obvious that changes and improvements may be incorporated therein, without departing from the broad scope of my invention as set forth in the annexed claims.
I claim 1. A weapon, comprising a handle having a tapered hole, a tapered, resilient member operatively mounted within the hole of said handle and adapted to frictionally engage the latter when the weapon is brought into operative position.
2. A weapon comprising a hollow handle, the hollow part of which is conical, a resilient member, having an enlarged conical portion normally secured within said handle, and adapted to frictionally engage the hollow portion of the latter, when brought into operative position.
3. A weapon, comprising in combination, a handle provided with a tapered passage, a resilient member having a tapered end adapted to engage the reduced end of said handle passage when brought into operative position.
4. A weapon, comprising in combination,
