This invention relates to certain improvements in folding mechanisms. 7 V
In producing certain types of products, such as magazines, pamphlets and the like, it is desirable to produce these products at very hi h speeds, that is, at the full speed at whic the press is capable of operating, as at maximum press speed. In certain is es of the products referred to it is desira 1e that the products be given two folds, first a transverse or cross fold and then a 1011 tudinaliold, that is, a. :iold at right ang es to the cross fold, and to produce this class off-products plurality of webs must be as sociated, cut into product length and folded. Where the product is to have a first trans verse fold and a longitudinal fold after wards the use of a former for the longitudinal fold is not practical, and it is preierable to use a folding cylinder for the first told and ii the second told is longitudinal to or blade folder, that is a folder having a h ads which has a chopping action and produces-a longitudinal iol' in the roduct. The speed of these chopper E0 ders, however, is limited and they will not operate as fast as the folding mechanisms which give the product a transverse fold,
"It is the especial object of the present in-' vention to produce a folding mechanism which will operate at high speeds in which a transverse fold is given the product and a longitudinal fold also given the product, the mechanism bein arranged so that time is al-' lowed for the re atively slow chopper folder to operate without slowing, down the opera tion of the press as a whole.
A further object or the invention is to produce a mechanism of simple form by which the desired high speed can be obtained.
With these and other objects not specifically re-ierred to in view, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and combinations which will he described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed. J

Generally speaking, the invention in cludes in combination a plurality of folding devices to which a product in the form of associated webs and cut into suitable length is "forwarded, these folding mechanisms operating at high speed, as, for instance, full press speed, and acting to give the products a transverse ."iold. Cooperatin with these folding mechanisms are a plura ity of transfer cylinders to which the products are transierred from the folding cylinders in oppo= site directions alternately, these transfer mechanisms being driven at a lower speed and each delivering to a chopper blade folder operating at the lower speed of the transfer cylinder such as arrangement giving the re- .quired time for the slower moving chopper As shown, the parts of themechanism are supported in side frames 1, 2, of any suitable configuration, these being united by suitable cross framing, indicated by the numeral 3. In the particular arrangement illustrated,

2.- In a folder, the combination of a plurality of rotary. folding mechanisms operating at highed, including sheet taking devices andfo ding devices acting to alter-' 'nately take and fold a product with a cross fold, a plurality of second folding mechanisms operating at a lower speed for giving the products a second fold, and a plurality of rotary intermediate transfer mechanisms operating at the lower'speed of the second folding mechanisms by which products are transferred thereto from the rotary folding mechanisms in different directions.
3. In a folder, the combination of a pair of folding cylinders operating at high speed,
sheet taking and folding devices on the cylinders acting to alternately take and fold a product, a pair of chopping blade folders operating at a lower speed for giving the roducts a fold at right angles to the first old, and a pair of intermediate transfer cylinders operating at the lower speed of the chopping blade folders by which the products are transferred thereto from the folding cylinders in different directions.
4. In a folder, the combination of apair of complementary folding cylinders located closely adjacent and operating at high speed, sheet taking and folding devices on the cylinders acting to alternately take and fold a product, a pair of chopping blade folders' forgiving the products a second fold, transfer cylinders disposed on one side of each folding cylinder by which the products are transferred to the chopping blade folders, and means for driving the transfer cylinders at a lower peripheral speed than the folding cylinders.
5. In a folder, the combination of means for forwarding and associating a plurality of webs at press speed, a pair of rotary carriers operating at press speed and having means for. severing the webs into product lengths, and sheet taking and folding dev1ces acting alternately to take and fold a product, a second pair of folding mechanisms o crating at a lower speed for giving the pro ucts a second fold, and an intermediate transfer mechanism dis osed on one side of each folding cylinder y which the r giving the products a second fold,

In a folder, the combination of means for forwarding and associating a plurality of webs at press speed, a pair of rotary carriers operating at press speed and having means for severing the webs into product lengths and means for giving the resulting roducts a first fold, a pair of chopping lade folders, a pair of intermediate transfer cylinders acting to alternatel transfer products from the folding cylin ers to the choptging blade folders, and means for driving e transfer cylinder at a lower peripheral s (1 than the folding linders.
7. In a folder, the combinatlon of means for" forwarding and. associating a plurality of webs at press speed,'a pair of rotary carriers operating at press speed and means for severing the webs into product lengths and sheet taking and folding devices acting alternately to take and fold a product, a second pair of folding mechanisms operat ing at a lower speed for givin the products a second fold,. an interme iate transfer mechanism disposed on one side of each folding cylinder by which the roducts are transferred to the second fol ing mechanisms in different directions, and means for registering the products for the second fold.
8. In a folder, the combination of means for forwarding and associating a plurality of webs at press speed, a pair of folding cylinders operatingat press speed and having means for severin the webs into product lengths, a pair of c opping blade folders, a pair of intermediate transfer cylinders acting alternately to transfer roducts from the folding cylinders to the c oppin blade folders, means for driving the trans er cylinders at a lower peripheral s eed than the folding cylinders, and means orregistering the products for the second fold.
