Description

BOOK, PAD, AND TABLET, AND LINE RULER THEREFOR Filed Sept. 26. 1950 I INVENTOR W 54 k I BY a M I A TTOR/VEY Patented Mar. .14, 1933 PHILLIP H. KAI TFMANN, OF CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OHIO 300x, PAD, Aivn TABLET, AND LINE RULEB, rn'nnnron Application filed September 26, 1930. .Serial No. 484,604.
This invention relates to devices for ruling, lines upon the sheets of notebooks, pads,
and tablets, and more particularly to devices of. this character which are incorporated with and form a part of such a book or tablet. The application is a continuation 1n part of my application N 0. 140,7 51, filed October 11, 1926, now matured into Patent No.
It is the'general purpose and object of the invention to provide, for notebooks, pads and tablets, a device which is capable of being combined or associated therewith, preferably as a cover member, and which device will enable lines to be ruled'rea-dily and conveniently upon the sheets therebeneath and at varying distances apart from the margins ofsuch leaves.
Further and more limited objects of the invention will appear hereinafter'and will be realized in and through the construction and'arrangement ofparts shown in the. drawing hereof, wherein Fig; 1 represents a per-' spective View ofa tablet having my invention incorporated therewith; Fig. 2 a View in. end elevation of a notebook of the looseleaf bindertype in which my invention is incorporated; and Fig- 3 a view, similar to Fig. 1, showing another form of notebook of the loose-leaf binder type in which my invention is incorporated;
Describing by reference characters the parts shown in the drawing, and first with particular reference to the form shown in Fig. 1, A represents a stack of superposed leaves, each'leaf having its sides and one end free and having its opposite end secured to corresponding ends of the other leaves in a manner usual in the construct-ion of tablets, as by means of an adhesive uniting such ends. Each leaf may, if desired, be provided with lines A extending longitudinally thereof and parallel with its sides. For
the purpose of ruling lines transversely of* the sheets of the pad or tablet, I have provided a transverse-line ruler, which is indicated generally at B and'which is shown as connected to the top of the tablet by a channel-shaped binder C, secured as by an adhesive to the end of the ruler, to the correwith a sponding end of the pad or tablet, and to the bottom ofthe lowermost sheet 'of the pad ortablet. Thecombined cover and lineruler B comprises preferably twoplies of material, the outer or foundation ply B 'being of tough pliable material, preferably paper, and the inner ply B which is secured'to the outer plyas by an 'adhesive,-being preferably made of blotting paper; The I combined cover and line ruler'B is provided plurality of folding lines or hinges B the said folding lines or hinges being preferably parallel with each-other and iv ex tending transversely of the tablet and constituting, when the cover is folded back thereon, straight edges for the purpose; of rulinglines upon the sheets A therebe'nealth.v
The folding lines or hinges in this case are conveniently formed by scoring the inner the'purpose of ruling lines at any desired 5 distance from the ends of the. sheets A therebeneath; The scorings above described are hereinafter referre-d'to as score lines. 7
It will be obvious that, by the construction shown and described, I have provideda.tab--.
let with an attached line ruler which. serves the triple functions of a line ruler, ablotter,
and a cover.)
In Fig. 2 1 have shown a modification of the'invention shown in Fig. 1' wherein che line ruler D is preferably formed in the same manner as the line ruler B, consisting'ofa foundation p-ly D,-'preferablyof tough,.pliable paper, and a lower. ply D preferably'of blotting paper, adhesively united to the r foundation ply and provided'withi the folding'line or hinges D As will appear from Fig. 2, the combined pad'and line ruler will be provided at one end with. apertures E which, in the form of my invention shown inFig. 2, are adaptedto receive therings F carriedby the back F of the loose-leaf binder, the covers of which are indicated'at F In Fig. 3 therev is shown another form of loose leaf binder, with which my invention:
B may be folded along any 1 p is incorporated. In the embodiment of my invention shown in the said view, A denotes a stack of leaves which constitutes a filler for the loose leaf binder which comprises an integral upper cover G and lower cover G united by the back G Openings G are provided through the covers G, G adjacent to the back G and through the corresponding end of the filler, the filler being secured in place within the loose leaf cover by the rings G In the constructionshown in this view, the upper cover G constitutes a line ruler, the lower surface of such cover being provided with the folding lines G extending upwardly thereinto from the lower surface of the cover, the folding lines being conveniently formed by cutting nearly through the .cover from the bottom to the top thereof.
In this embodiment of my invention, the
upper cover of the loose leaf binder constitutes a llIlG IIllBI for any successive numbers of fillers. I
In all of the forms of my invention, the line ruler is so, associated and connected with ,the stack of leaves therebeneath as to enable lines to be quickly and conveniently ruled 'upon successive leaves of such stack byfolding the rulerybackward upon itself in the manner indicated in Fig. 1.
Furthermore, while I prefer to combine theline ruler with a blotter and to form the .folding lines by cutting through or partly .through the blotter member, I do not limit myself to this manner of constructing the -lineruler, but only in accordance with the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
' j Having thus described my invention, what .I claim is: 1 A line ruler comprising a sheet provided. with spaced narrow, line-like, relatively ---weak .areas extending thereacross for facilitatingbending, the distance between said areas being great relative to the width thereprovided with spaced narrow, line-like, rela tivelyweak areas extending thereacross for facilitating. bending, the distance between said areas being great relative to the width thereof.
of to facilitate bending.
4. A line ruler comprising a sheet providof a line ruler secured. in superposed relation cent the stack of sheets.
thereto and comprising a sheet provided with spaced score lines on the surface adjacent the stack of sheets, said line ruler being made up of a sheet of relatively thin, tough and flexible material and a covering of blotting pa per, the score lines being formed in said blotting paper.
7. A pad including a cover and stack of sheets bound together, said cover comprising a relatively thin, tough sheet of flexible material having secured thereto a pluralitv of strips of relatively thick, less flexible material adapted to act as ruling edges.
8. A pad including a cover and a stack of sheets bound together, said cover comprising a relatively thin, tough sheet of flexible material having secured thereto a plurality of strips of relatively thick, less flexible material adapted to act as ruling edges,
said strips having their edges in substantially abutting relation when said cover is in full covering relation to said stackof sheets. v 9. A pad including a cover and a stack of sheets bound togethen'said cover comprising a relatively thin, tough sheet of flexible material having secured thereto a plurality of strips of relatively thick, less flexible material adapted to act as ruling edges, said strips being composed of blotting paper.
10. A pad including a cover and a stack of sheets bound together, said cover comprising a relatively thin, tough sheet of flexible material having secured thereto a plurality of strips of relatively thick, less flexible material adapted to act as ruling edges, said strips having their edges in substantially abutting relation when saidcover is in full covering relation to said stack of sheets, said strips being composed of blotting paper.
PHILLIP H. KAUFMANN.
2. The combination with a stack of sheets of a line ruler secured in superposed relation thereto, said line ruler comprising a sheet v 1 3. A line ruler comprising a sheet provid- '7 ed with spaced, score lines on one side there- 'ed with spaced, parallel score lines on one side thereof to facilitate bending. 5; The combinationwith a stack of sheets,-
