Heretoto-re it has been the common racties to construct protectors for the limbs of: horses from leather, and to secure them in position by means of straps andlouckles.

Such devices have proven, howevento be diflicult to maintain in support andnprotec tion to the limb upon which they are positioned which is due mainly to the stiffness of the leather particularly afterthe same has been subjected to use. Furthermore, such devices do not afi'ord the proper protection without the provision of pads of relatively soft material which have to be sewed orotherwise fastened to the protector.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a new and novel protecting device and support for the limbs of horses and siinilar animals which will have inherent tendencies to stay in the proper adjusted position in 5 which it is placed.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of an elastic material preferablyrubber for the purpose of making such protecting devices, it having been found that 0 rubber is one material which possesses the in herentability to support and retain its position upon the limb of an animal.

A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of the character which will provide highly efiec'tive cushioning ef fects and which will retain such ability to provide a cushion in use.

A still further object of the invention resides in a novel construction whereby the de vice will be cap able of permitting of free and easy movement of the joint of an animal by which it may be worn.

A still further object of the invention re sides in the use of a new and novel material for pads and protectors of the aforemen tioned type, which material permits of the attachment of securing devices such as straps, buckles and the like without injury thereto.

In that form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 inclusively, the'invention is illustrated in the form of a pad for the protection of the shin portion of the front leg of ahorse. The invention consists of a limb encircling body portion which is composed of suitable soft flexible material such as rubber, and it is provided at the desired location 7 with a relatively heavy orthickened' portion 31 which provides the pad and which in'the present illustration of the invention" is located upon the insideof the pad. The thickened portion 31 ispreferably an integral portion of the main body portion 30 ofthe device, and; in

7 that form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 4, the device is secured in position by means of straps 32 which engage with buckles 33 and which are adapted for interengagement upon the outside of the leg of a horse. The body portion 30 may be provided with openings 34 and 35 to permit of free movement of the leg of a. horse in action.

In that'formof the inventionillustrated in Figures 8 to 11 inclusive, theinvention is illustrated as a pad for the protection of a shinand hock of-the rear leg of a horse, and inthis forin ofthe invention the device comprises-amain body portion'50 which is adaptedrto be wrapped around the hind or rear leg of a horse and secured by means of a series of straps andbuckles 51. The device is provided uponthe inside portion with a thickened portion 52 and is provided with openingsor the like 53 to accommodate the hock of the'leg.

' In 'th-is form of the-invention as in other forms thereof, the device is formed from soft pliable material such as rubber and the thickened portion is-anintegral part of the main body portion thereof. 7

In Figures 12 and 13,.the-invention is illustrated in a pad for protecting the pastern of the'leg, and in thisfform of the-device, the body portion is designated 60- and is provided with'a relatively thickened portion 61 which forms the protective pad. Straps such as'62 and buckles such as63are employed for securing the device in position, and one of said straps encircles the limb of the horse at a point immediately below the hock 64 the other set of straps encircling'the hoof as best illustrated in Figure 12.

In that form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1st to 19 inclusive, the invention I at this portion as indicated at 72, and is adapted to receive a removable cup shaped pad such as 7 3. In that form of the invention illustrated in Figures 14, 16, 17, 18 and 19, the device is illustrated as secured in position by means of straps or the like 7 4 sewed or otherwise secured to the body portion 70 as at 75, and buckles 76. In this form of the invention the device is adapted to encircle the limb of a horse, with the cupped pad receiv ing the hook of the limb and it is secured in position by engagement of the straps 74 with the buckles 76.

In Figure 15, however, this form of the invention is illustrated as in the form of a stocking like structure which is stretched to pass over the hoof of the horse and after it is in position it is retained in such position device comprises a by the inherent resiliency of the body portion.

In each form of the invention where the device is maintained in position, by means of buckles and straps, the straps are secured to the body portion of the device by sewing and in order to secure these straps by sewing, a construction such as illustrated in Figure 20 is preferred. In this figure, the body portion is designated at 80, and embedded therein there is a fabric 81. This fabric is preferably closer to one surface than the other of the body portion the surface to which it is the closest being that face to which the straps are secured. The straps are designated numerically as 82, and are secured to the body portion by means of a line of stitching 83 of which there may be one or more and which stitching-passes entirely through the straps, the body portion and the fabric embedded therein.

In Figures 21 to 25 inclusive, the invention 7 is illustrated in the form of a pad for protecting the heels or quarters of a horses foot or hoof and in this form of the invention, the

ceive the heels or quarters of the hoof. As best illustrated in Figure 23, the cupped recesses 93 are formed in a thickened portion 95 and the thickened portion forms the pad for the heels which are designated 96 in the drawings. In this form of the invention the device is secured in position by means of straps or the like 97 which engage buckles 98 as best illustrated in Figures 21 to 24 inclusive and when straps are in position upon the horses hoof, the cupped recesses 93 will receive the heels of the hoof with the pad or thickened portion 95 positioned directly therebeneath and to the rear thereof, with the wing extensions 91 projecting upwardly in the direction of the hock.

In that form of the invention illustrated in Figure 25, the straps and buckles 97 and 98 respectively are dlspensed with and the' entire protective device is of a continuous form and is adapted to be maintained in position merely through the inherent resiliency of the material from which it is made.

From the foregolng it will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and improved form of protective pad and support for use upon the limbs and extremities of limbs to prevent injury due to interference in action.

It is also to be understood that the present invention by reason of the fact that it employs relatively soft and resilient material, provides a holding quality which secures the device in position without danger of accidental displacement thereof thusaifording maximum protection and support at all times.

Having thus described the invention, what isclaimed as new and What it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,

A-boot fora part of a horses legcomprising a leg encircling member, the leg contacting portions of which are formed .of rubber and shaped to conform to the irregularities of the leg, the top and bottom portions of the boot having inside diameters which are slightly less than the corresponding outside diameters of the leg to which the boot is to be applied so as to exert a contracting and supporting pressure upon the leg when ap plied, said boot having an opening in its front portion intermediate the top and bottom port-ions, permitting protrusion of a portion of the joint during movement of the joint to which the boot is applied.
