My present invention .has Areference to improvements in means forau-tomatically washing the felts of paper making machines, and more particularly it is my purpose to provide a felt washer which will automatically move across the under surface of a felt while it is in operation on a paper making machine, to remove dirt, scraps of paper stock, and iine particles. Conventional paper making machines, now in use, take up `the particles of paper stock upon an endless moving felt;`
that is, the newly made wet paper sheet is supported by the felt which in turn passes between two heavy press rolls, the purpose :of which is Ato squeeze the water out of the paper. In operation, the water is squeezed out of the paper and through the felt which, in the course of a very few hours, becomes .dirty and matted with fine particles Aof paper stock. It is practice in the paper industry to run Apaper making machinescontinuously for more than one shift and it .is a very .diiiicult and complicated operation to .stop or shut down .a paper making machine so long as stockis being fed toit from the beaters. Accordingly, when a felt becomes dirty and it is necessary to shut down or stop the paper making machine, there is a serious Aloss in production.
My present invention contemplates "the utilization of a suction `box or chamber which is movably supported on tracks beneath .the endless feltso .that thefelt will just rub across the top of the box or chamber. The suction .box is provided with suction holes, and
ahead ofeach section hole .a stream of water is forced against the felt .and which is subsequently sucked out lof the felt through the suction openings, thereby cleaning the vfelt of any particles of paper :stock or dirt that may be accumulated thereon. In order to prevent cleaning the felt in 4streaks `or spots only, my invention contemplates slowly and continuously moving the suction box back and forth beneath the felt as it passes over the suction box, so that the entire felt is cleaned. It is understood that the openation of my suction cleaning apparatus is continuous throughout the whole time that the paper making machine is in operation so that the felt is automatically kept in a clean condition and, it is 1931. seria1No.547,96s. y

rlhe numeral (l) designates my suction box which may be of yany suitable construction, andis slidingly supported on rails (2 and 3) or guides, beneath the endless felt, (not shown)of a conventional paper making mavvchine so that the felt passes over andin contact with the top of .the box. The suction box (l) is disposed transversely with respect to the felt (not shown). and-is of considerably less width than the felt (preferably about 26 .inches shorter) The suction box has two (or more) suction holes (therein and there is a vshower 'pipe' (5) in advance of the box for forcing a stream of water against the felt as itpasses over the box, which is then sucked out of the felt, takingaccumulated dirt, waste and line particles of paper stock with it.
The suction box has a suitable connection (6) at one side. with the piston'rod (7) of a hydraulic power assembly The piston rod (7) passes through a stuffing Abox into thecylinder (10) into connection with a double-action piston assembly (not shown) there- The suction box also has connected therewith a reversing rod (11) which slides in guides (12) and has connection with a lever (12a) connected with the four way valve (13) of the hydraulic reversing cylinder assembly 14). Water under pressure, or other suitable means (such for instance as compressed air or the like) is fed throughpipe. (15) into branch` connections (16) and (17), one tothe hydraulic power assembly (18) and the other to the hydraulic reversingmechanism (111);
The hydraulic power assembly (8) has a four way operating valve (18) into which the pipe (17) leads, and which is connected with branch pipes (19) and (20) 'leading to the two heads Vof cylinder (10). j
The hydraulic reversing mechanism (14) also has a four-way valve (13) into which actuates the pistons therein (not shown) to move the piston rod (2a) back to draw the lever (25) connected therewith back'to throw 'valve (18) to shut olf water from pipe (20,)
and admit water to pipe (19) to move the piston in the hydraulic power cylinder andits rod (7 forwardly and consequently to move the suction box (1)VV forwardly.4 The operation Vof my invention is accordingly automatic in'every respect, and automatically reversing, to'move the suction b ox (1) back and forth beneath the felt so that the entire surfaceof the felt as it passes overthe box is acted upon to completely, automatically, and continuously cleanse the same. The cylinder, (10) and the cylinder [(28) are Asuitably mounted insupports (26) and (27), there is a suction hose connection (28) on the suction box for attaching a suitablejflexible suction hose (not shown). vThere are also suitable supports (not shown) for thev guide rails (2 and 8). The views of the drawings are designed to show the operative featuresof the present invention without including the well-known construction ,of paperv making machines, felts, supports, and the like.
From the foregoing, it is believed, that the construction operation and advantages :of
- my'invention will be apparent, but since some changes in detail may be desirable inthe detailed parts of its organization, it is again emphasized that interpretation thereof should only be conclusive when made in the S light of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a paper making machine of the type having a continuous, moving felt carrying the wet paper stock, a washer for the felt comprising a suction box located beneath and in Contact with the felt .and having spray means in conjunction therewith, a hydraulic piston assembly, the pistonrod of which is connected with the suction box toA move the same beneath the felt, and hydraulic reversing mechanism for the piston assembly andactuated by movement of the suction Vbox for controlling said pis- 'ton assembly to give a reciprocating motion piston assembly, and actuated by movement of thel suction box for-controlling said piston assembly to give a reciprocating motion to the suction box there being a pair of associated four-way valve 4devices in conjunction therewith; v l

In combination with apaper making machine of the type having a continuous moving felt carrying the wet paper stock; a washer for the feltY comprising a water spray pipe extending transversely of the felt and beneath the same, a suction box located adjacent said spray pipe and extending transversely of the felt, beneath and in contact with the felt; vsaid suction box having suction openings therein and having a length less than the width of the felt; a frame carrying the suction box; a hydraulic double acting piston assembly, the piston Vrod being connected with the suction box to move the same beneath the felt, and hydraulic revers- Ving mechanism for the piston assembly including an actuating rod connected to the suction box to be controlled by the movement of the suction box; a common fluid pressure supply pipe having branches to the piston Yassembly and they reversing mechanism, and four way valves, one for the piston assembly and one for the reversing mechanism, said valves controlling the introduction of fluid under pressure thereto. g Y
