IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-PADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 89,694, dated April 17, 1877; application filed January 27, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD O. BURGESS, of Providence, in'the county of Providence and State of lthode Island, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Perforated marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my perforated harness-pad, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view thereof.

The object of this invention is to provide a pad for harness which shall protect the animals skin from being chafed, and unite coolness and strength in the highest degree compatible with such service. This object is accomplished by the construction hereinafter particularly described.

In the accompanying drawings, A designates an elongated rectangular pad, of felt or similar soft material; and B, an ornamental leather facing, which is secured thereto by a leather border, 0, said parts A, B, and G being sewed or otherwise firmly attached together. D D designate two small transverse buckling-straps, which are sewed to said facing B near the ends thereof, and serve to hold said facing and paid to the harness of a horse. Said pad and facing are provided with a number of perforations, E, which register with each other, and admit air to the horses skin and keep it cool. Without these perforations the said pad and facing would add greatly to the heat of the animal, and in warm weather would be productive of much discomfort, while if the facing B were removed the lessening of the heat would be accompanied by a greater liability to wear and roll the pad A.

My construction keeps the pad always in proper shape, protects it from being worn by the harness, and still prevents the horses skin from being unduly heated, thus combining all the chief requisites of a good harne-s-pad.

The pad so constructed may be applied to a breast-collar, breeching, or on any other part of the harness of any draft-animal where it would be serviceable.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an improved article of manufacture, the harness-pad herein described, consisting of the perforated felt A, having the perforated leather facing B, the holes in the facing and felt registering with each other, border 0, attached to the felt and facing, and straps D l), substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
