tions a bafiie is run along the upper surface of the lower generating bank for a portion of the length of the tubes in such bank and then run upwardly to the tube of the upper bank, the superheater commonly being placed in the inter-bank space in the first pass so formed. In such arrangements, one of the headers for the superheater is often placed in the second gas pass on the opposite side of the said baffle from the superheating elements, the ends of the elements extending through the baflle to the header. This construction has required a special bafile structure in the space between the two generating banks, hereinafter referred to as the interdeck space. Such special construction has given trouble at times from lack of tightness as well as from a high rate of depreciation.
It is an object of my invention to provide an improved baffle structure for the interdeck space of such superheater boilers.
The novel features of my invention will be pointed out in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, together with detail objects and advantages, will best be understood from the following description of a superheater boiler which relates to an illustrative embodiment of my invention shown in the accompanying drawing. In said drawing Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through an interdeck straight tube boiler.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 10 is a. boiler of well-known type having a horizontally inclined upper bank of 1 straight generating tubes 12, 12' and a lower bank'of generating tubes one of which appears at 14, the remaining tubes of A the lower bank being broken away. The banks having tubes 12 and 14 are spacedvertically to "provide an interdeck space 16. A bafli e" 18 extends vertically downward through the tubes 12 near their centre points andfacrossgthe interdeck space '16 and" thence laterally and downwardly parallel to the upper'surface of'tube 14 to the lower end of the bank of which 14 is a part, so as to form one side of the first gas pass through theboiler. In order to protect the baffle 18 in'the part below the tubes 12, I provide a water cooled'support for it in cluding a; rowof tubes 20 running parallel to tubes 14' along their lowerportion but turned upwardly near the centers of the tubes so as to contact with. and support the face of the bafiie 18 on the side toward the 'first gas pass. At their'lower ends, tubes 20 connect into the header 22 for the tubes 14 and at their upper ends tubes 20 connect into a horizontal header 24. The lower section of the bafll'e'18 contacts with the lower portion ofthe header 24 and the upper section of the baffle 18 contacts with the topof the header. Header24therefore forms a portion of the battle The section of, the baflle which extends through the upper bank formed the tubes 12 may be of ordinary construction, but a packing section 26 is preferably included between the upper surface of header 24and the lower surface of the upper section of the baflle. In order. to provide for water circulation through the tubes 20, tubes 20 extend from the header. 24 parallel to tubes 12 to the upper header 28.
' When, as is usually the case, a superheater 30 is placedin the interdeck space 16in the first gas pass, at least one of the headers 32 of the superheater 'is'often placed in the second gas pass so that it is, necessary to extend the tubes of the superheater through the baffle 18 to connect within the secondpass. arrangement shown for this purpose, I have illustrated, plates 34, 34' preferably of cast iron which lie'on opposite sides of the vertical portions of the tubes, 20 and which areclamped to these tubes by bolts and large nuts (not shown). The ends 30 of the superheater elements pass through notches, not shown, in the edges of plates 35 guided on plates 34, the plates 35 being separated by vertical seams and having complemental notches along the separating seams forming openings through which the ends of the elements 30 pass. The openings in plates 34 arecovered by the notched plates 35 which are clamped to elements 30 but slidable vertically in guides on plates 34. The arrangement described whereby the ends 30. of elements 30 pass through baifie '18 without detracting from its efiiciency. as a baflle forms, no part of my invention and is not claimed herein, being disclosed and claimed in application, Ser. Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, the modification illustrated in these figures relates solely to the arrangement for connecting the ends of the tubes 20 and 20. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 4, individual box headers 40, 40,
one between each tube20 and its continuation 20, are substituted for the horizontal header 24.
It will be seen that the construction in accordance with my invention not only prolongs the life of the bafileby cooling it as well as making a tight construction, but also reduces the number of parts and provides greatvertical portion of the row of tubes crossing the space between the banks, and thebafile has a packing section contacting with the upper face of the header means.

What I claim is: p
1. A boiler having in combination a vertically spaced pair of banks of horizontally inclined generating tubes, a row of tubes'extending along and crossing the space between said banks, a baflle structure extending in contact with said row from its lower end to a point near said upper bank and thence upwardly through the upper bank so as to separate the first gas pass from the second, said tubes of the baflie supporting row of tubes having two portions, header meansnear the upper tube bank for connecting said portions, and said baffle having a packing section contacting with the upper face of said header means.
