Patented Jan. 24, 1933' PATENT oFFica anonro roucnem, or Team, ITALY NEGATIVE ELECTRODE FOR ELECTRIC AGGUMULATORE Application filed July 8, 1931, Serial No. 549,504, and in "Italy July 16, 1930.
The present invention relates to negative electrodes for zinc-lead accumulators and comprises an electrode of such class consisting of a divided metal support on which zinc is deposited during the accumulator char ing operation and of a rigid metal frame on which said support is mounted, said frame connecting the outer circuit directly with the two lateral edges of said support for zinc.
The present invention has for its object an electrode of this kind in which the sup port intended-to receive the zinc deposit consists of a gauze, net or grid of crossing or,
interwoven metal wires, said gauze, net or grid being connected at least with two lateral portions of the conducting frame and being separated from the frame portion where the connector for connection with outer circuit is fastened.
Owing to the provision of a rigid frame for carrying said gauze or. grid support, this gauze or grid may consist of wires of very small gauge, this provision enabling the electrade to be made exceedingly light while securing a large area for contact of the same with the electrolyte.
On the annexed drawing are illustrated by way of example two embodiments of the negative electrode according to this invention,
and
Figure 1 is a front view of a complete electrode; a
Figure 2 is a front view of a modification, with parts removed.
In said figures, 1 is a conducting frame consisting by way of example of a length of metal wire bent in the shape of a four-side loop and having its ends connected with each other. One side of this frame and more particularly the side which is intended to be at the top when the electrode is in operative position in the accumulator, has a wing 2 fastened thereon in any approved manner, as by being cast or moulded thereon, said 5 wing providing a connector for connection with outer circuit.
Two opposed edges of a piece 3 of metal wire gauze, net or grid are fastened on the sides of said support frame 1 which are intended to be vertical when the'electrode is in its normal operative position in the accumulator; said edges are fastened on. said frame sides say by being wound and soldered thereon.
The lower edge of said wire gauze piece 3 may also be connected with the bottom side of frame 1, or such a bottom side of frame 1 could be omitted and then the frame 1 will be restricted to a top and two lateral sides.
p The top edge of the wire gauze piece 3 is. v
on the contrary separated or spaced from the top side of the frame 1.
In the construction of Figure 2 the metal frame 1 is covered with a strip. of insulating material, as rubber, which may consist of a r the electrode provides a continuous and even surface and the top edge of the auze or grid piece 3 is engaged and firmly eld and also safely insulated from the top side of the frame 1.
By the described construction, a through out uniform and regular distribution of current is secured over the whole extent of said support grid 3 because of its connection with the sides of the frame 1 with exception of the side thereof carrying the connector 2 for connection with outer circu'i It is useful to provide corrugations 5 (Figure 2) int-he metal wire gauze or grid 3 such corrugations being conveniently made along closed lines; theymay be easily secured by I a die-pressing or moulding operation. Gonveniently said corrugations have such a thickness or span as to impart to corrugated portions of said gauze or net a thickness substantially equal to that of the frame 1; this pro-.- vision prevents deformations and warpin of the electrode when it is located intermediate the cooperating separators usually em bodied in accumulators.
The metal gauze or netpiece3 may be of 9 copper, brass, or any other metal being a good conductor of electric current and it is covered over its whole active surface with a laver of zinc which is obtained by. electroframe, a circuit connector on said frame, and
a wire gauze mounted in said frame, said wire gauze having a portion of its ,edge connected with said frame and being separated from it in its portion adjacent to said connector.

an insulating strip bridging said separated gauze edge and frame portion.
4. A negative electrode for the deposition of zinc during the charge in zinc-lead electric accumulators, comprising a conducting frame, a circuit connector on said-frame, a wire gauze mounted in said frame, said w1re gauze having a portion of its edge connected with said frame and being separated from it in its portion adjacent to said connector, and an insulating strip embracing said frame and adjacent peripheral portion of said gauze.
5. A negative electrode for zinc lead electric accumulators comprising a conducting frame, a circuit connector on said frame, a wire gauze having'corrugations extending along closed lines and supported on said frame, the edge of said gauze adjacent to said connector being separated from said frame.
6. 7. A negative electrode for the deposition of zinc during the charge in zinc lead electric accumulators comprising a four-side conof zinc during the charge in zinc-lead electric accumulators comprising a four-side conducting frame, a circuit connector on one side of said frame, a four-side piece of corrugated wire gauze having two sides connected with said frame, the connector-bearing side of said frame being separated from adjacent side of said wire gauze piece.
