This invention relates to broom machines. The principal object of this device is to provide a broom machine which is relatively simple in construction and yet is efficient.
A further object is to provide a machine that may beused successfully by blind persons without danger of injury A further object .is tor provide definite means for clamping metal casing brooms.
A still further object is to provide means for nailing metal casing to butt of handle of broom. r
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combinationv and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of the entire machine with parts broken away to show working structure.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a broom made on this machine.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detailed perspective view of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a cross section taken on line 44 of Figure 3.
By referring to Figures 1 and 2 it Will be seen that there is provided a table comprising a top 1 and legs 2. In making brooms upon this device the operator takes a metal casing 3 and places it between clamp members 4. The ends of this metal casing 13* are bent upwardly by the operator at points 5 in order to allow the operator to place broom straws 6 within the metal casing 3. It will be seen that there is provided a block 7 with a channel 8 for the reception of a broom handle 9. The operator places one-half of the broom straws 6 in position so that the upper end of the broom straws are within the metal casing 3 and adjacent and atri ht angles to the block 7. The operator now places the broom handle 9 so that a flattened end rests upon the 1932. Serial No. 615,588.
broom straws 6 and extends over the broom straws 6 to an extreme lower edge 10 of the metal casing 3. The operator now adjusts an extreme outer end 11 of the broom handle 9 into a notch 12 formed in a support block 18. The operator next firmly secures the broom handle 9 by means of a grip arm 14 which is caused to be pressed against the broom handle 9 in order to prevent the same from rotating when the nailing process takes place. In order to do this the operator swings a lever 15 forward which causes a crank end 16 to pull down upon a link 17 which is pivoted to the grip arm 14.- It will be seen that the grip arm 14 is pivoted to a pivot pin 18 which is supported by a support block 19. The operator is now ready to place the balance of the broom straws 6 in position so that the broom handle now is midway between the broom straws 6 and centrally located in reference to the upper portion of the broom.
Figural shows the broom ready to be removed, that is, the nailing device has been placed in position and the nails driven, the broom handle 9 is securely held by means of thegrip arm 14, and the metal casing 3 is shown in a pressed and clamped position.
By referring to Figure 3 it will be seen thatthe nailing device consists of a slidable vertical shaft 20, the upper end of which supports a support plate 21 to which is attached a'nail driver member consisting of a base portion 22 and a plurality of plungers 23. These plungers 23 function with a nail block 2 i which is slidably maintained upon the plungers 23. The nail block 24 is provided' with channels 25 into which the nails are-placed. These nails are held in an upright position due to an apron 26 which closes off the extreme lower portion of the sides of the channels 25. In order that the nail block 24 may automatically take a position when released so that a new set of nails may be inserted in the channels 25 there is provided a pair of dependent support rods 27 which are slidably maintained through openings 28 formed in: outwardly extending projections 29 ofthe nail block. It will also be seen that there isprovided a coil spring 30for each of the dependent supportrods 27. These coil springs 30 function with the depended support rods 27 between the under side of the support plate 21 and an upper side of the outwardly extending projections 29.
By referring to Figure 1 it will be seen that the slidable vertical shaft 20 is caused to move up and down due to the swinging of a lever 31 to the right or left. This lever 31 is keyed to a shaft 32, the outer end of which is connected to a link 34. The outer end of this link 34 is pivoted to the slidable vertical shaft 20 by means of a pivot pin 35. hen the operator is building up a broom the support plate 21 and dependent parts may be r swung out of the way due to a collar 36 and a head 37, formed on the .slidable vertical shaft 20, which allows the support plate 21 to swing freely in a horizontal plane, and to be carried up or down with the movement of the slidable vertical shaft 20.
It will also be seen that the clamp members at are allowed to move due to a pair of clamp arms 38 which have their lower ends pivoted to a support block 39 by means of pivot pins d0. The operator, by moving a lever 41 which has its inner end pivoted to a pivot pin 4L2 which is supported by a support block 39, causes a link 43 to move a manipulating arm 44 which has its inner end pivoted to a pin 45 which is carried by the support block 39. It will be seen that this manipulating arm 44 has integral oppositely disposed arms which connect to links 46 which are in turn secured to the clamp arms 38. Figure 1 shows the clamp members 4 in a clamped position. In order to release the clamp members 1 the operator would move the lever 41 upwardly. This movement of the lever 41 would cause the integral oppositely disposed arms to move in a clockwise manner and cause the clamp members 4 to be moved outwardly in order to release the broom.
It is pointed out that in the construction of this device the entire construction avoids the use of wheels, gears, or whirling pinions so that the machine may be safely and efficiently operated by touch alone as well as by both sight and touch.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described comprising a table, means for holding a broom handle in a non-rotating position, means for clamping ametal casing about broom straws, in combination with a. nailing device comprising a slidable vertical shaft, a support plate pivotally hung at upper end of said slidable vertical shaft, a base portion secured to under side of said support plate, a plurality of plungers, a nail block functioning with said plurality of plungers, a plurality of channels formed in said nail block for the reception of nails, means for holding said nail block under spring action, lever means for moving said slidable vertical shaft upwardly and downwardly.

In a device of the class described comprising a table, means for holding a broom handle in a non-rotating position, a clamping means comprising a support block, a pair of pivoted clamp arms, a lever pivoted to said support block, a link secured to said lever, a manipulating arm secured to the upper end of said link, a pair of oppositely disposed integral arms formed on said manipulating arm, a pair of links functioning with oppositely disposed integral arms and connected to said clamp arms, a slidable vertical shaft, a support plate pivotally hung at the upper end of said slidable vertical shaft, a base portion secured to the under side of said support In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
