1 COTTON-PRESS. No. 189,177. Pat ented April 3, 1877.
\ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT Crrroa.
CHARLES J. BEASLEY, OF PETEBSBURG, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO WM. H. TAPPEY AND ALEXANDER STEEL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON- PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189, 177, dated April 3, 1877; application filed October 31, 1876. i
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CHAS. J. BEASLEY, of Ietershurg, in the county of Diuwiddie, andin the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton- Presses; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersof reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of cotton-presses in which the screws are driven by bevel-gears, and 'in which the screws are at times subjected to a pressure in opposite directions. In such presses therearises a serious difiiculty from the wear of the collars or other parts which have to sustain the end thrust of the screw, the consequence of such wear being that the gearing will be drawn out of gear when the pull or pressure is in one direction, or go too deep in gear when the pressure is inthc other direction. The object of my invention is to obviate this difficulty; and to this end the nature of my invention consists in an adjustable support or cross-head with a movable collar on the screw, and in the combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. v
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed todescrib'e its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a part of a cotton-press embodying my invention. Fig.
2 is a section through the cross head, and Fig. 3 is a plan'view of the same. 7
A represents the operating-screw of a cottonpress. This screw is held in position by means of a support or cross-head, B, which abuts on one side against a stationary collar, G, welded, or otherwise permanently attached, on the screw, and on the other side of the cross-head is a movable collar, D, on the screw held in position by one or more set-screws, a, the screw A passing through the center of the cross-head.
The cross-head B is attached to the bottom of the press by bolts G G, which are provided with nuts I) I) on both sides of the cross-head for ad justmcn t.
When the collars have worn until there is a'looseness or play of the screw endwise the movable collar D may again be brought close against the cross-head, and the gearing be properly adjusted by the nuts I) on the bolts G.
Having thus fully'described my invention, what-I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pa ten t, is-
The combination of the screw A with the stationary collar 0, movable. collar D, adjustable cross-head B, screws G G, and nuts I) I), all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of October, 1876.
CHARLES J. BEASLEY.
