ITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo JAMES A. LEEPER, OF CONCORD, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN KITCHEN-VENTILATORS.
Specin'cation forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,114, dated April 3, 1877; application tiled May 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. LEEPER, of Concord, in the county of Callaway and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchen-ventilators', and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of Ventilators that consist, essentially, of a box or case provided with suitable doors or openings and a Ventilating pipe or iiue, and so constructed that it may be placed over a cooking` stove or range, for the purpose of carrying oi" the heat and odor; and my improvement consists in constructing the Ventilating box or case with a double or branched pipe, one branch of which serves as a Ventilating-Hue, while the other forms, when my ventilator is in use, a section of the stove-pipe that passes into the chimney or out in the open air.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin'g parts in both the figures.
, A is a box or case, made of wood or similar non-conducting material, and having the closed top or roof D, side doors'B, and legs C. By the latter it is lifted some distance from the floor, so that the cold air may readily pass into lthe box, even when the doors B are shut. E and F are pipes, one of which, F, passes vertically through the roof D, while the other, E, passes in a slanting or oblique direction from pipe vF down into the box.
.When it is desired to use my .ventilator it is simply placed over the cooking-stove, as represented in Fig. 2, and a section of the stove-pipeA is removed, the remaining lower section being conducted into lue F. Another section of pipe, leading into the chimney or out in the open air, is next affixed upon pipe F, so that this pipe, which is a part of my ventilator, will, for the time being, form a sectionl of the stove-pipe, the corresponding portion of ilue having been removed. This creates a draft through pipe F, and also through the branch pipe E, by which, through the last-named pipe, the heat and odor incident to cooking is carried oft' into the tlue.
I am well aware that it is not new to construct a Ventilating-case with a Ventilatingflue and an opening for Ithe stove-pipe to pass through 5 but this I do not claim. I am not aware, however, of such a case ever having been constructed with a branch pipe, E F, one branch of which, when the ventilator is in use, forms a section of the stove-pipe, while the other is a iiue for carrying oi' heat and noxious odors, and conducting them into the chimney.
Having thus described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by vLetters Patent of the United States- The portable Ventilating box or envelope A, to be placed over a cooking stove or range, and having the doors B and branch pipe E, connectedV with the main pipe F, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have axed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. LEEPER.
