Description

A. ADAMS 2. m.
. ORNAMENTAL CARD BOARD. N'o.-189,076. Patented April 3. 1877.
NPEIERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGION, D Cv UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLSTON ADAMS AND ARTHUR BOTT, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ORNAMENTAL CARD-BOARD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 89,076, dated April 3, 1877; application filed v September 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, ALLSTON ADAMS and ARTHUR BoTT, of the city and county of A1- bany, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Mannfacture of Ornamental Gard-Board, of which the following is a full and exact description:
Our invention consists in ornamenting the surface of card-boards, in the manner hereinafter described, so as to closely imitate the effect produced by embossing their surfaces; and, in combination with such ornamented cards, in attaching thereto sheets of plain paper, for producing plain-surfaced card-boards, which, when interposed between the eye and the light, will show an ornamentation not observable, or but slightly so, under any other view.
The object of our invention is to produce an ornamental card upon which lithographic or other similar printed impressions may be made in full, unbroken lines.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, Arepresents a; sheet of card board, either of a pure white or any desirable tint. ()ver its entire surface an ornamental design is printed, in a shade ofink a trifle darker than the tint of the surface of the card-board,- and, as we preferably make it, of a pattern closely simulating an embossed impression. This printing We usually efi'ect by the lithographic process; but it is clearly manifest that the same effect may be produced by any means by which the printed lines will not be raised above, nor depressed below, the surface of the card.
By this means we produce, at a trifling expense, a card-boardin which all the beautiful effects of embossed impressions are secured, and upon which subsequent lithographic imornamented card-boards, a sheet of the ornamented board A is secured, by means of paste or other adhesive material, between the sheets B, of plain paper, which, in the drawing, have their upper edges detached from the sheet A, Y
for the purpose of showing more clearly the manner of making these card-boards. When used for this. purpose, the ornamentation of the sheet A may be made with brighter tints, and the ornamental impression need only be made upon one side of it. In this manner a very beautiful cardboard is produced at a very trifling expense, that is perfectly adapted to the purposes of lithographic impressions, or for any other kind of printing.
It is manifest that for the purpose of making a thinner card-board the use of one of the sheets B for the back side of the card may be dispensed with.
We claim as our invention- I The combination, with the ornamented sheet A, of one or more plain sheets, B, secured thereto in the manner and for the purpos herein specified.
' ALLSTON ADAMS.
, ARTHUR BUTT.
