Description

l atented Dec. 6, 1 932 UNITED T S PATE T; oFFmEf JACQUE C. MORRELL AND JESSE L. ESSEX, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF SOUTH DAKOTA No Drawing.
This invention relates to refining of hydro: carbon oils and refers more particularly to the purification or refining of cracked distillates for the purpose of'removing therefrom objectionable and deleterious 7 compounds which are present therein or may be formed as a result of the commercial use thereof.
In its broad aspects, the present invention is directed to the treatment of cracked distillates produced from liquid phase, liquid-vapor phase, or vapor phase cracking processes, while in its specific aspects it is particularly adapted to the refining of cracked distillates produced in the vapor phase cracking of hyvention to provide a process for removing those compounds which are gummy in themselves or form gummy compounds or oily polymers when used. It is a further object to produce this result economically and efficiently.
It is a still further object of the invention to produce a product characterized by its stability, absence of colorforming and odor forming compounds, and free from objectionable amounts of gum forming or polymer forming compounds.
In the specific embodiment of the present, invention we propose to subject cracked distillates to the action of borax, either dry or in REFINING OF HYDROCARBON OIL Application filed January '9, 1928. Serial No. 245,625.
undergoing this treatment, for example, cracked distillates from vapor phase.crack-- ing of hydr0carb0ns, have been reduced in i gum content to as low as 3%to- 10% of'the original gum content, for example, cracked distillates containinga gum content of 3,000 milligrams per 100 ccs. have been reduced to approximately 100 milligrams per 100 ccs.
The refining agent contemplated for use with the present invention, i. e. borax, may
be used as a sole refining agent or may be used .as a step in refining in conjunction with us ual refining agents such as sulphuric acid, caustic soda, sodium plumbite, adsorbent material and the like. i y We claim as our invention; c
1. A step in a process of refining cracked hydrocarbon distillate which consists in subjecting said distillate to the action of borax at a temperaturesubstantially above atmosv 1 hydrocarbon distillates obtained by vapor phase cracking of hydrocarbon oils, which consists in subjecting such distillate to the action of borax at a temperature substantially above atmospheric but below cracking to remove gummy compounds and oily polymers therefrom.

solution. In carrying outthe process the borax is introduced into the cracked distillate and the entire mixture subjected to heat The I manner of heating may be by prolonged refluxing, by distilling while refluxing, or by distilling the oil over the borax. In short, the time of heating the oil in the presence of the borax is regulated to suit the type of oil undergoing treatment, and the results desired in the refining action and reduction in amount of deleterious substances.
