Description
Dec. 6, 1932. o. N. WHITEHEAD PACKAGING DEVICE Filed Nov. 25, 1931 iii... iii! I INVENTQR Oscar/V W y 77m! in ATTO YS Patented Dec. 6, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE OSCAR N. \VHITEHEAD, OF WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR T H. L. JUDD COMPANY, INC., OF WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE PACKAGING DEVICE Application. filed November 23, 1931.
My invention relates to means for packa ing a plurality of small articles of irregular outline, such as screw hooks, screw eyes and other devices such as are formed from wire,
for example, and which, by reason of their awkward shape, do not lend themselves to easy, careful or compact packaging. Ordinarily, such articles are handled in bulk but in modern merchandising such as conducted by the so called Five and ten cent stores the call is for a neat and efficient package of such a number of such articles as can be sold for a small coin. To that end I have devised such a package and have shown the same in one preferred form in the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a side view;
Fig. 2 is an edge view.
In the particular form of my invention that I have elected to show in the drawing the holder is especially shaped to receive and hold in a compact and neat packaging arrangement a dozen screw hooks.
1 represents what I may term a backing member. The upper end of this backing member is provided with a transverse slot to form two spaced holding shoulders 22. 33 represent cheek pieces at the opposite side edges of said backing member, which cheeks extend back at an angle thereto for the double purpose of reinforcing the backing against bending and of forming a pocket for the articles to be assembled side by side. In the present instance the holder is adapted to receive a plurality of screw hooks H, the hook ends of which may be passed through the slot forming the shoulders 22. The shanks of said hooks are then placed side by side in the space or pocket between the cheek pieces. 5 represents a strap, which may overlie the shanks of the hooks to hold them in said pocket and against the bacln'ng. If desired shoulders 6 may be formed on the edges of the cheek pieces, to prevent accidental slipping off of the strap, and these shoulders may be easily formed by merely notching the extreme edge of each cheek piece. When the articles are assembled as shown they occupy a minimum of space,
5 since they rest against each other side by side,

the end hooks being supported by the aforesaid cheek pieces and the shanks of all of the hooks being held by the backing between the cheek pieces. The construction permits very quick packaging and, by reason of its great compactness and the security with which the articles are held, permits ready and economical transportation.
l Vhat I claim is:
A holder for the packaging of a plurality of irregularly shaped articles, comprising a backing member, perforated adjacent one end edge to form holding shoulders to receive between them the irregular end portions of a plurality of irregularly shaped articles, with means to hold the other portions of said articles against the rear of said backing, with cheek pieces at the side edges of said backing to reinforce the latter and to form a holdin pocket for the last mentioned parts of said 70 articles.
OSCAR N. WHITEHEAD.
