RUSSELL Bonnnxncomoa OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
mmmmmm JEWEL MOUNTING Application filed May 81,
The present invention relates to jewelry and particularly to interchangeable jewel mountings, whereby difierent stones or ornaments may be readily applied to a piece of jewelry and interchanged whenever desired.
Anobject of my invention is to. provide a mounting in which a jewel may be securely held without requiring the manipulation of any screws'or other fastening devices;
Another object of my invention is to provide a mounting in which a jewel is held by a p ii of interengagingparts which are locked together by a spring latchj A more specific object of my invention is to provide a locket with a lid, the latter when in closed position cooperating with the locket to holda jewel. V V
Other objects of my invention will appear in the following description of a preferred embodiment and the novelty and scope of the invention will thereafter be pointed out in the claims. r
In the accompanying drawing, v
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a locket ring embodying my invention; J
- Fig. 2 is a similar view, but with the lid of the locket partly drawnout; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the ring, the section being taken in anaxial' plane, i. e. on line 33 of Fig. 4; v 'Fig. 4 is a view of he ring in transverse section, the section being taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and
V Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the lid of the locket.
' I have shown in the drawing, a ring 10 provided with an enlarged head 11 of rectangular form and having a recess 12 in the upper face thereof. This recessed head constitutes the body of a locket. It will be understood, of course, that the locket portion of the ring may be either integral with the ring, as shown in the drawing, or, it; may be made as a separate body 'solderedor otherwise secured'to the ring proper. i l
The locket is provided with a lid 13 which has sliding engagement therewith. The side walls of the locket extend above the end walls to form lips 14 which are undercut to overlap and slidably engage opposite edges of 1929. Serial a... 367,370.
the lid, said edges being preferably beveled to fit the undercut'lips. The lid;13 consists of a rectangular plate formed at each end with upstanding lips 15 which are undercut 0r bentinward to overlap and slidably'engageopposite ends of a jewel 16. The jewel is beveled at each end to fit snugly within the lips 15. It will be observed that when the parts are assembled, as shown in Fig. 1, the jewel will be held at each end by means ofthe lips15 and will be confined at eachside by the lips 14 of the locket .body, so that it will be impossible for the jewel to be removed aslong asthe lid is closed, or, even partly-closed upon the body. However, when the'lid is withdrawn from engagement with the body, the ewel may readily beslid laterally out of engagement'with the-lips 15.
' To hold the lid in closed position, I provide a spring latch which is secured to the lid 13 and has'locking engagement with the locket bodyfll when the, lid is closed. This spring latchcomprises a plate or clip 17, of spring metal, which is soldered or otherwise secured 7 18'serves as a thumb piece for unlatching the clipand is adapted' to slide in the recesses 19 formed in the forward end wall or lip of the lid. The forward end wall 20 of the locket body isalso provided with a recess 21 which is alined with the recess 19 when the lid is 35 closed and serves to'receive the lower portion of the plate 18. The upper edge ofth'e' wall 20 is also'formed with'a notch 22 adapted to receive the clip 17. The clip 17 'is formed with a transverse groove 23, which is bordered on one side by the plate 18 and on the other by a shoulder 24,-. V y
When the lid 14 is closed, the spring clip will snap over the wall 20 with the plate 18 bearing against the outer face 'ofthe wall and the shoulder 23 against the inner face of the wall. This will positively lock the lid against displacement. The outer "face of the'plate 18 lies flush with the outer face of the end wall 20 and also with the adjacent lip FIG 15. The ring may be engraved with the joint between the plate 18 and the body and lid forming part of the design so as to conceal the presence of the clip.
The ring is assembled as follows: The jewel 16 is slid laterally into place on the lid13 with the lips 15 engaging and holding opposite ends of the jewel.
lateral displacement-{but will also overlap the side edges of the jewel so as towprevent the jewel from sliding out laterally. As the lid is slid home the springclip -17-will snap over the notched portion 22 of the wall 20, and the shoulder 24 will prevent the lid from being accidentally drawn out, while the plate 18 will limit the extent to which the lid may be slid inward upon the body. At any time that the "user'wishes to change the jewel, all he needs to do is to lift the plate 18 sufliciently overthe shoulder 24 to clear the-wall 20, and at the same time to draw the lid outward. Afterthe lid has been withdrawn from'the locket, the-jewel 16 maybe removed and alr'fiother' jewel insertedin the lid in place itvvi 'i. '1 It will be understood that my invention is not limited to the exact details of constructionhere illustrated and that I am at liberty to make such changes in form, construction and arrangement of parts as fall within the spirit and scope ofthe claims. It will be understood also that'myinvention is applicable not onl'y'to a locket'ring but torings not "provided with locket bodies, and furthermore it maybe applied to lockets not forming a part'of a ring, as well as to other classes ofjewelry. a e Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire'to'secure by'Letters Patent is as follows: I i 1. A locket-comprising a body portion, a
