This invention relates to cigar bunch making machines and particularly to such machines of this class in which the cigar bunch-es are formed in bunch concentrators having cavities in which the bunches are concentrated.
In ejecting the formed bunches from the cavities, considerable trouble is experienced by the bunches sticking to the cavities owing to tobacco gum squeezed from the bunches during the concentrating process. To obviate this trouble, it is the main object of the present invention to provide an atomizing cleaner for spraying the cavities prior to the insertion of each bunch, thus not only preventing the bunches from adhering thereto, thereby causing breaking or splitting of the heads of the bunches, 'out also to clean the cavities from particles of tobacco or dust which may have been left by the preceding bunch. With this and other objects not specifically mentioneo in view, the invention consists in certain constructions and combinations which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
This invention comprises an atomizer connected to an air blast line and so located as to throw a fine spray of water into the bottoms of the cavities near their head-ends as they successively come into the range of the atomizer during the operation of the machine. Adjusting means are provided on the atomizer to regulate the fineness of the spray. The flow of air is controlled by a trip lever actuating a valve in the air line. The trip lever in turn is operated by a cam revolving with the drive shaft of the bunch machine so that the air blast is properly timed with the action of the machine. The spray keeps the cavities moist, thus facilitating the ejection of the bunches, as tobacco does not adhere so readily to a wet surface.
In the accompanying drawing, which shows the invention embodied in a cigar bunch concentrator such as shown in the copending application of Rupert E. Rundell, Serial No. 185,199, filed April 20, 1927:

In carrying the invention into efliect, there is provided a cigar bunch concentrator comprising an intermittently rotating turret having a plurality of cavities in which the bunches are concentrated, and means for spraying liquid into the cavities to clean and wet the same, whereby the bunches may be removed more easily therefrom. In the pre ferred form of construction the means for spraying liquid into the cavities includes an atomizer, a nozzle connected to said atomizer, and an air blast line connected to said atomizer and provided with a cam operated valve. These various means and parts may be wldely varied in constructlon within the scope of the claims, for the particular machine selected to illustrate the invention is but one of many possible concrete embodiments of the same. The invention, therefore, is not to be restricted to the specific construction shown and described.
The atomizing cleaner consists of an air blast line 5 which is connected through a regulating valve 6 and a pipe 7 to an air compressor or an air blast system. Pipe line 5 is equipped with a control valve 8 which is actuated by a trip lever 9 pivoted on a stud 10 attached to the frame of the machine. Lever 9 carrying roller 11 is operated by a cam piece 12 mounted on the revolving cam drum 13 on drive shaft 14 of the bunch machine. Lever 9 is equipped with an adjusting screw 15 which engages and pushes the stem 16 of valve 8 when roller 11 is raised by cam 12. A collar 17 near the lower end of pipe line 5 engages with a projection of lever 9 and prevents the same from falling back too far when not in'engagement with cam 12. I
To the upper part of pipe 5 is attached a rubber tube 18 connecting the former with the pipe 19 of an atomizer 20 of usual construc; tion which is held in position by a bracket 21 mounted on stud 22 carried by the frame of the bunch machine. The atomizer pipe 19, on its lower end, is equipped with a nozzle 23,
while the upper end carries adjusting nuts 24 bymeansofwhichitispossibletoregulatethe spray S issuing from nozzle 23. The air line 5 is furthermore equipped with a safety valve 25 which is set to open in case the air pressure in the line exceeds a given limit. 7 j
The cigar bunches to be shaped are placed in cavities 26, usually formed on a turret 27 rotating on a shaft 28, and, after being C011". centrated, are ejected therefrom bymeans of ejecting pins 29 mounted on a slidable bar 30 and penetrating into each cavity when in its delivery position. lhe turret 27 rotates in step-by-step motion and, while at rest upon the ejection of a bunch, each cavity is automatically sprayed and cleaned by the atomizing cleaner which is actuated by cam 12 at the proper moment.
The sprocket 31 on cam shaft M is driven by chain 32 from the sprocket 33 on drive shaft 34. For intermittently rotating the turret suitable indexing mechanism driven by bei el gears 35 and 36 from shaft 34 may be provided. The same may comprise the shaft 37 carrying an indexing head or cam 38 provided With a peripheral cam track engaging the rollers 41 in studs 42 carried by a bearing ring 4.3 on turret 27 for intermittently rotating the turret.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a cigar bunch concentrator having a plurality of cavities, of meansfor sprayingliquidintosaidcavitiesto clean and Wet the same, whereby the bunches may be removed more easily therefrom.
2. Thecombinationwithacigarbunchcon centrator having a plurality of cavities, of means for spraying liquid into said cavitiesto clean and Wet the same, whereby the bunches may be removed more easily there-- from, said concentrator including an inter-- mittently rotating turret in which said cavi-- ties are formed, and said means including an atomizer arranged to spray liquid into the cavities at one station of said turret.
3..lhe combination with a cigar bunch concentrator having a plurality of cavities, of means for spraying liquid into said cavities, to clean and Wet the same, whereby the bunches may be removed more easily therefrom, said means including an atomizer, a. nozzle connected to said atomizer, and an air blastline connected to said atomizer and pro vided with a cam operated valve.
