IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-POUN DERS.
Specification forming part of Letters. Patent No. 188,850, dated March 27, 1877; application filed February 24, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALPHEUS BUG-BEE, of Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Clothes-Founders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a vertical central section of this invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same.
This invention has relation to atmospheric washing-pressers; and it consists in the construction and noveltarrangement, in connection with the external cone, of the internal funnel, having its base joined to the inside 7 wall of said cone, openings being left at in;-
tervals in the joint, and having its apex downward and open for the free passage of water, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the external cone-of the presser, having a neck, -B, whereby the handle 0 is attached. The base or marginal rim of this cone is downward. D represents the internal funnel or reversed cone. This has its base upward and attached to the inside wall of the outer cone, the line of attachment extending around the wall at about its middle portion. At intervals around the base of the inner cone openings a are formed. The inner cone extends downward, its'apex being about level with the base of the outer cone, and centrally arranged with regard thereto. The apex is provided with an opening or passage, 12. Between the lower portion of the wall of the outer cone and the outer wall of the reversed inner cone there is an annular space, 0, and above the reversed cone is a chamber, d, into which the openings (1 in the upper portion of the annular space a lead. w
The operation of this device is as followsi The clothes, being soaped in the usual way are thrown into a tub, and pressed down lightly, and covered with scalding-hot water, so that the water stands two or three inches above them. The washer is then pressed perpendicularly downward rather heavily, whereby all the clothes under the cone are pressed against the bottom of the tub. The washer now being raised the suction brings the clothes with it to the surface, when a disengagement is effected by the entrance of the air. A reverse downward movement of the presser now forces the hot water or suds up through the clothes, and through the openings a into the chamber d. In its upward passage through the clothes the water produces a cleansing effect, and when the washer is raised this effect is continued by the discharge of the water of chamber 01 through the opening b at the lower endor apex of the funnel inside upon the clothes in a full stream.
In the downward movements the clothes are wedged into the annular space 0 with considerable force, so that when the washer is raised the suction is quite powerful.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure I by Letters Patent, is-
l. The washing-presser, consisting of the outer cone A, and the inner funnel D joined to the inner wall of the former, open at its lower end or apex, and having the openings 0!, leading from the annular space 0 around it into the chamber above it, substantially as specified.
2. In a washing-presser the combination, with the outer cone A, of the inner annular wall D, joined to the inner wall of said cone, and having vents formed in said inner wall, the latter extending downward to form an annular space, 0, around the base of the cone,- substantially as specified. p
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALPHEUS BUGBEE.
Witnesses CHAS. W. FIsH, D. N. Lam.
