Description
D. L, IS.
No.188,805- Patented March 27,1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
DANIEL L. LEWIS, OF LOVELLS STATION, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM BOYNTON, OF PETERSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PITMEN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,805, dated March 27, 1877 application filed February 12,1877.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL L. LEWIS, of Lovells Station, in the county of Erie and State of' Pennsylvania, have invented a new man is to vary the depth or height of action of the beam by changing the position of its arcs of motion.
It often occurs, both in drilling and in pumping an oil-well, that the height or depth of action of the beam has to be changed;
this I accomplish by changing the length of the pitman, thus changing the position of the arcs of motion of the beam.
-' My device is shown in the accompanying drawing by one figure, which is a vertical longitudinal section of the pitman and clamping or adjusting device, and a transverse section of the beams end.
A is the pitman. E is the wrist-pin at its lower end, and F is a common tighteningkey. D is a slot made in the pitman to permit the passage of the clamping-bolt G at various distances from the wrist-pin. B B are clamps, and are provided, if desired, with teeth b b, and with axis or journal pins B B. Each half of the clamp-and its journal-pin are of one piece of metal; but this need not be so necessarily.
When the clamps are set upon the rod A the bolt 0 passes through the slot D, and the clamps are griped by the action of the nut a. By having the slot D in the pitman, the clamp can be set at various distances from the wrist-pin, thus' varying the length of the pitman.
The journals B B rest upon or within the working-beam in such a manner as to allow the clamps to conform to the motion of the pitman. Any arrangement or connection securing that end is all that is required.
When it becomes necessary to readjust the pitman, the bolt 0 is loosened, and the pitman is raised or lowered, as required, and the clamps are again tightened by the out 0 on the bolt 0. Therefore, by the means of the adjusting device, consisting of the clamps B B and the bolt 0, with not 0, I am enabled to shorten or lengthen the pitman A, and thus regulate the depth or height of action of the beam.
My device does not affect the length of stroke of the beam, but changes the position of the arcs of motion of the beam.
I am aware that adjusting devices have been made to attach to the opposite end of the beam from which mine is attached, for the purpose of adjusting the sucker-rod. My device is not intended for use in connection with the sucker-rod, but solely for use in connection with the pitman, by which I am enabled to change the position of the arcs of motion of the beam.
My device is of use both in drilling and pumping the well, while sucker-rod adjusters are only of use in pumping the well.-
What I claim as myinvention is- 1. For changing the arcs of motion of the ends of the working-beam of an oil-well, an adjustable clamp or coupling having an axis or journal, B B, for so connecting with the working-beam as to conform to the position of the pitman during the oscillation of the beam and the revolution of the driving-wheel, as set forth.
2. The combination of a pitman or connecting-rod, A, with an'adjustable clamp or coupling, for changing the arcs of motion of the working-beam, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of a pitman or connecting-rod A, having a slot, D, with an adjusting device, which connects with the workingbeam, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said DANIEL L. LEWIs, have hereunto set my hand.
DANIEL L. LEWIS.
