This invention relates to an improvement in match packages. 'It has for its object to provide an article of this character in which the safety factor of the article will be greatly stressed. With the construction of my improved match package, the possibility of the package accidently igniting in the pocket or in the hands of the user, will be avoided. I so arrange the various parts and elements of the device that when the package is in its closed position the heads of the matches are wholly covered and are prevented from contact with any other articles that may be carried in the pocket. The construction of my package is also so arranged that a match can only be ignited while the cover is in a closed position or at least is held in such a way that the same is interposed between the ignited match and the rest of the matches in the package. Due to the'arrangement of the various parts of the cover member for the package, a uniformly compact and symmetrical package results.

With these objects, and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, in view, I have devised the particular arrangement of parts set forth below and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.

Reference is to be had to the connected 3 drawing, forming a part hereof, in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank which forms the match book covering;

Figure 2 is a plan view of the match package in closed position;

Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view on 49 the line H of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows;

Figure 5 is a side elevation of the closed package;

Figure 6 is a view of the upper end of the 5 closed package, and Figure 7 is a face view of a part of the match strip before it is inserted in its covering.

Throughout the various views of the drawing, similar reference characters designate slmilar parts.

In the embodiment of my invention disclosed in the accompanying drawing, 1 show the covering for the match package in detail in Figure 1. The same consists of a single. blank of thin, pliant material, such as cardboardor the like. Saidblank is provided with a centralbody. portion 1 and four in tegral laterally extending flaps 2, 6, 9 and 12.

The flap .2, which forms an end closure for the package, has a curved edge 3 and is folded inwardly on spaced parallel fold lines a and 5, and is so gummed to the body portion. 1 that it stands substantially vertical as disclosed in detail in Figure 4, and acts to cover and protect the heads of the matches 17 6 and to close the upper end of the package.

' The flap 9 is inwardly folded on the fold lines 10 and 11, and said flap 9 when in such folded position, overlies the end strip 20. of

the matches and is secured thereto by means of a staple. 18, which staple is located adjacent the fold line 13 of the cover flap 12. 7

At 6 is disclosed anotherretaining flap for the match strip, the said flap being inwardly folded on the parallel fold lines 7 and 8 and 5 when so folded is caused to overlie a side strip 19 formed on the match strip. A staple 15 passes through the retaining flap 6 and through the side strip 19, and said staple 15, co-operating with the staple 18, acts to firmly 39 secure the match strip in position within its covering. 7 y a V The cover :flap 12 consists of a section of cardboard formed integrally with the body 1 but extending therefrom at an angle when it 3. is unfolded or located in the same plane as the body portion. This cover flap 12 is folded upon the fold lines 13 and 14, which fold lines diverge outwardly from one another from the lower edge of the covering toward :9 its opposite edge. Thus, whenthe cover flap is folded inwardly upon saidfold lines 13 and 14 it fits'smoothly over the wedge-shaped contour of the match strip and follows the curve of the edge '3 on the flap 2 and the free end of said cover tucks easily underneath the edge of the retaining flap as disclosed in Figures 2 and6. The resultant package in closed position, assumes the wedge-shaped contour apparent from Figure 5. The angular dispo- 1.

sition of the cover flap 12 is such that the cover fits evenly and smoothly over the matches without in any way distorting the closed package.

It will be seen that the completed package is one wherein the matches are wholly covered when the cover flap is closed. The heads of the matches are protected by the upstanding flap 2 and the lower ends of the matches are covered by the turned-over retaining flap 9. lhe position of the staple 18 is such that the cover 12 cannot accidently slide beneath the matches while the packages are contained in the pockets of the user.

It will also be noted that the cover 12 is provided with a friction strip 16 located adjacent its lower edge on its outer face. The position of this strip is such that the same is located remotely from the match heads in the package and being provided on the outer face of the cover, it requires that the cover be closed, or at least interposed between the matches in the package and the match that is being ignited by the user. A decided safety factor is thus attained by the structure disclosed.

What I claim is 1. A match book provided with a covering having a body portion, a pair of securing flaps, a match strip having parts extending beneath said securing flaps and means extending through said flaps and through the parts of the match strip that extend beneath the flaps to hold said match strip in position, a cover member having its end tucked beneath one of the securing flaps, and an upstanding Wall adjacent one' edge of the covering and adjacent the heads of the matches in the strip. 2. A covering for a match book, having a central body portion and four wings extending therefrom, three of said wings folded to overlie and cover a match strip, with two of said wings fastened to said match strip, and the fourth wing folded to form a wall adja cent to the heads of the matches in the covermg.

3. A covering for a. match book, having a body portion and four wings extending therefrom, one of said wings forming a cover flap and projecting at an acute angle to the body angle from the body portion when said cover flap is in its open or extended position, and folded on divergent lines when closed across the match strip to cause it to conform to the face of the wedge-shaped match strip.
