UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM HANLEY, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, AS SIGNOR T FERGUSON BROTHERS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY TABLE STRUCTURE Application filed July 9, 1980. Serial No. 486,684.
- a considerable space either in use or when stowed away.
My invention comprises a supplemental game table top of relatively large size which may be easily and quickly mounted on and secured to the ordinary card table.
My invention further comprises a supplemental card game table top which is foldable so that it may be readily stowed away in a small space when not in use.
My invention further comprises a supplemental game table top having a shallow recess in its underside shaped to receive and fit the card table top on which it is to be mounted, locking devlces being-employed for removably securing the game table top to the card table.
Another feature of my invention is the provision of a flexible top cover for the playmg surface of the supplemental game table top, said cover extending across the hinged connection between the two table members so as to present an uninterrupted playing surface when the members are unfolded.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 represents an octagonal supplemental game table top in top plan; v
Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same;
Fig. 3 represents a bottom plan view;
Fig. 4 represents a transverse section taken in the plane of the line IV-IV of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 5 represents a bottom plan view of the table top when folded;
Fig. 6 represents a section taken in the plane ot the line VI-VI of Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 7 represents an enlarged detail section showing one of the fastening devices for securing the supplemental game table top to the card table;
Fig. 8 represents a bottom plan view; Fig. 9 represents a top plan'of a round supplemental game table top; Fig. 10 represents a bottom same;
Fig. 11 represents a section taken in the plane of the line X][XI of Fig. 10, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 12 represents a bottom plan of the table top in its folded position, and
Fig. 13 represents a side view of the same. In the form shown in Fi 1 to 6 inclusive the supplemental game tab e top is shown as having eight sides. This top comprises two half members 1 and 2hinged together at 3, 3, so that they may be folded into a relatively small and compact bundle. The playing surface of this supplemental game table to is plan of the herein shown as square and as having a e ible cover 4 extending across the hinged connection between the two half members.
Between the periphery of the table top and the playing surface the upper side of the top is rovided with an annular series of pockets 5, 1n the present instance eight in number, for receiving the chips or other pieces used in play.
At the side of each pocket I have provided a circular hole 6 for receiving and holding a drinking glass.
This supplemental game table top is provided wit suitable means for mounting it upon a car table of the usual four sided form, against unintentional displacement and is also provided with means for removably securing the game table top to the card table.
In the present instance I have shown the underside of the game table top as having a shallow recess 7 shaped to receive and fit the top 8 of the card table reg liesented in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 4. e complementary portions of the shallow recess 7 are formed in the two half members of the game table top. a
In the present instance the means which I have shown for removably securing each of I the half members of the game table top to the card table comprises a swinging yielding locking device. This locking device is herein shown as comprising a cylindrical member 9 hinged at 10 t0 the game table top member, within which cylindrical member is located thestem 11 of a handle 12 a coil spring 13 being interposed between the bottom cap 14 of the cylindrical member and the plunger 15 at the inner end of the stem.
A latch 16 is carried by the stem 11 exterior to the cylindrical member 9, which latch may be moved longitudinally and swung laterally to bring it into and out of engagement with the peripheral frame of the card table 8. The lateral movement of the latch and the hinged connection 10 serve to permit the device to be folded within the plane of the game top members when they are folded.
In Figs. 9 to 13 inclusive, a round supplemental game table top is shown. In this instance the two members 17 and 18 are hinged at 19, 19, to permit the half members to be folded together. In this form the flexible cover 20 extends across the playing surface as in the octagonal form of top hereinbefore described. In the round supplemental game table top the space between the playing surface and the periphery is provided with eight pockets 21, and holes 22, such as those shown in Figs. 1 and 3, are provided for drinking glasses. The devices for locking the half members may be the same as those described with respect to the octagonal top.
While I have illustrated and described this invention in the form of a game table top to be superimposed upon a card table, I desire it to be understood that the invention may also be embodied in table tops for other purposes which may be placed uponcard tables or other smaller tables not designed-for use in play: ing cards. For instance, a supplemental top designed for dining purposes may be constructed to be applied to a small table, such as an ordinary kitchen table. The scope of the invention is not, therefore, intended to be limited to game tables and game table tops, but is intended to be directed to tables and table tops for all uses. Furthermore, it is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to limit myself to the.
particular embodiment herein shown and described, but.
What I claim is 1. A folding supplemental table top having two hinged members, said tabletop hav- 'in said members shaped to receive and fit the top of a smaller table for mounting the supplemental table top thereon against unintentional displacement, and devices carried by both supplemental table top members for removably securing them to the smaller table top upon opposite sides thereof, said devices being foldable to positions within said table top members when not in use.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 7th day of July 1930.
IVILLIAM HANLEY.
ing a recess with complementary portions in v saidmembers shaped to receive and fit the top of a smaller table for mounting the supplemental table top thereon against uninten tional displacement, and yielding devices carried by both supplemental table to members for removably securing them to e smaller table top upon opposite sides thereof, said devices being foldable to positions within said table top members when not in use.
