Description

G. L. MARBLE Nov. 8, 1932.
SWORD Filed May 7, 1930 INVENTOR 660C916 Z. map/65a 714? ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 8, 1932 QFFICE GEORGE L. MARBLE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK swonn Application filed may 7,
The present invention relates to swords and an object of the same is to provide a simple take down construction which will permit the sword to be stored in an ordinary suitcase. Another object of the invention is to provide a novel construction which will permit the handle or grip, the guard and the blade to be readily connected or disconnected.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter de scribed: th novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a sword embodyin the present invention;
*ig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section;
Fig. 3 shows fragments of the handle or grip and the blade in slightly separated relation to the guard;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44, Fig. 2 and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55, Fig. 2.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention 1 indicates a tube forming the stem part of the handle and surrounded by a handle sleeve or grip portion 2 which abuts a 3 head 3 at its outer end and a collar 4; at its inner end. The collar is arranged in spaced relation to the inner end of the tube or stem 1 so that the latter projects at 5 beyond the collar and the latter serves as a transversely extending abutment for the guard 6 which fits on the projecting portion. In order to prevent lateral play or looseness of the guard on the projecting portion, the latter has a flaring portion 7 at its inner end and the opening in the guard is flared at 8. The length of the opening in the guard is slightly longer than the projection 5 so that the guard projects slightly beyond the end of the pro j ection in order that the guard may be firm- 5 ly clamped against the collar 4;.
The projecting portion 5 is provided with internal threads preferably double threads of high pitch for engagement with a like threaded tang 9 projected from the inner end of the blade 10 which is a longitudinally Serial No. 150,56?.
extending member. The tang is reduced with reference to the blade to provide a shoulder 11 or abutment transversely extending about the same for engaging with the adjacent face 12 of the guard 6 'so that the face 13 of the [53 guard is forced on the flared port-ion7 and against the abutment collar 4, thus firmly holding the guard between the handle and the blade.
lVith the end in view of preventing the C3 turning of the guard relatively to the handle, an interlocking connection may be provided between it and thehandle held in place by the interlocking relation between the handle and the blade. In this instance, the abut-v 5': ment 4 has two eccentrically arranged openings 14: which receive two parallel pins 15 projecting from the face 13 to one side of the opening through the guard.
It will be seen from the foregoing that there has been provided a sword in which there is a detachable interlocking connection between the handle and the blade formed, in this instance, by a screw threaded tang on the blade received within a reduced extension on the handle, the guard being held on this reduced extension between abutments on the handle and the blade. An interlocking connection is also provided between the guard and the handle held in place by the inter- $0 loclrin connection between the handle and the blade. This arrangement permits the ready separation or connection of the three elements and enables the sword in a knock down condition to be readily packed in a suit case.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sword comprising a handle having an abutment thereon, a reduced portion projectin from said abutment having an external flared portion and internally threaded, a blade having an abutment, a' screw threaded tang projecting from said abutment and received in the reduced portion of the handle, and a guard held between the two abutments and having a flaring opening engaging said flared portion.
2. A. sword comprising a handle having a grip portion, a blade, abutments one on each Cir of said parts, two interlocking parts arranged on the inner side of the grip portion between the two abutments, one on the handle and the other on the blade, one of said parts having an external wall, and a guard held between the two abutmnts, and having an openingflfittingrthe external wall of the said interlocking part. a
3. A sword comprising a handle having an 10 abutment provided with an opening, a portion projecting from-the abutment andprovided with a flaring surface and internally threaded, a blade having an abutmentja screw threaded tang projecting from said 15 blade abutment and engaging the internally threaded.- portion of the. projection. onthe whandle, ,and a" guard fitting; on the projection between the .abutmentstapered; internally to fit the 'flaring'surface-and havinga projection .ex-tending into theopening ofwthe abutmentof the-handle. V
- 4; A:- sword comprising a blade having a G v threadeditang and ashoulder at the base of the tang, a handle having a projecting-portion-: internally threaded to receive the I threaded tang and: having a-shoulder at the base: of theprojecting portion, and a guard v.mo'unted on the said projecting portion of the handle-and clamped between I the shoul- 1 ders-ofi theblade and handle.
