Description
s. r. CLEMENT. CLASPS FOR POCKET-BOOKS.
No. 188,589. Patented March 20,1877.
N-PEI'ERS. PNOTQLITHOQHAPNER, WASHINGTON. D cl l v UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON F. CLEMENT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAS-PS FOR POCKET-BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 88,589. dated March 20, 1877; application filed December 22, 1876.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON F. CLEMENT, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ulasps for Pocket'Books, Satchels, Traveling-Bags, 850.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective of a pocket-book with my invention applied thereto. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detail perspectives.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, having reference particularly to a slide which moves to and fro orupon a post or rod, a spiral spring encircling said rod and pressing against said slide, and the case within which said parts operate.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates the eseutcheon or outer plate of a clasp, having turned-over edges or flanges a a, and clamps or tongues a a). B represents the inner or back plate of said .clasp, turned up at top and bottom to form ears I) b, between which is firmly fastened a post or rod, G. c is a sleeve surrounding the lower part of the post 0, and D is a slide encircling said sleeve, and attached thereto, so that said sleeve and slide will move together on said post. E is a spiral spring surrounding the said post and sleeve, as shown, and pressing upon the slide D. F shows the keeper attached to the flap of the satchel, pocket-book, or other article to which the clasp is applied, said keeper being formed of the disks f and f, the latter having an opening, f for the passage of the head at of the slide D, said head projecting, as shown, through an elongated T- slot, a in the escuteheon or front plate A.
To fasten the clasp, the head d of the slide D is passed into the enlarged part of the openingf the spring then causing said slide to pass down the elongated part of said opening. To open the clasp the movement is reversed.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination of plate A, with penetrating-prongs a and slot a and plate B, having the flanged ends b b, with the post (J, slide-catch D, and spiral spring E, as shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the plates A B, rigid post 0, slide D, and spiral spring E, said slide and spring embracing the post, with the keeper 1 substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I elaim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of December, 1876.
SIMON F. CLEMENT.
