MACHINERY FOR LIFTING' WATER.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom llt may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo C. FOSTER, of Union City, in the county of Obion and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Drawing Water from Vells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure l being a longitudinal vertical section of the machine; Fig. 2, a view of a part detached.

A suitable frame, or curb, A, is provided, in which is mounted a windlass B, to be operated by a winch, in the usual manner. On one end of the windlass is a ratchet-wheel a, constructed so as to hold in both directions, substantially as represented in Fig. l. Sprockets b, o, o, or their equivalents, are secured on the windlass B, to receive a rope or chain C, which passes around said windlass, and the opposite ends of which extend over pulleys D, D, on an arm E, that extends from the frame A. To the ends of this rope are attached the buckets F, used in raising the water. Above the windlass, and attached to the frame by a pivot, on which it turns, is a double catch, or pawl, G, arranged substantially as shown in the drawings. One of the heels of said pawl rests upon, and holds, the ratchet-wheel a, as the windlass is turned in one direction; and the other heel thereof holds the windlass when turned in the other direction. A swivel-link d, is attached to the pawl, to which are secured two lines e, and f, extending upward through rings, or pulleys, g, g, or their equivalents, on the frame, and thence passing downward through rings or pulleys L, h, on another part of the frame, and finally are secured to rings la, lo, which slide respectively on the two ends of the rope C.

is descending. A knot z', or other enlargement, is made in the rope C, a little distance above each bucket, of such size that the corresponding ring le, will not pass over it, but will be carried up therewith when the rope is drawn up, in the act of raising a bucket of water.
The action of the apparatus is as follows: Suppose the windlass to be moving in the direction indicated by the arrow. The line e, which is attached to t-he ring on the ascending end of the rope, will, when the knot z', or its equivalent, draws upon its ring k, raise the pawl Gr and carry it over the highest point, till it falls on the other side of the pivot, as indicated by red lines in Fig. l; so as to be ready to hold the windlass when turned in the opposite direction, for raising the other bucket. In the same manner the action of the opposite end of the rope C, operating on the line f, reverses t-he position of the catch. Thus, the pawl is shifted to opposite sides of the windlass automatically.
A suitable tilting arrangement may be provided, by means of hooks Z, Z, so arranged as to catch hold of the edges of the buckets as they ascend, as represented in the drawings.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the double pawl G, and of the lines c, and f, the sliding rings la, 7c, and knots z', or their equivalent-s, in combination, so as to automatically shift said pawl alternately to opposite sides of the windlass, and thereby prevent each ascending bucket, in turn, from returning into the well, substantially as herein specified.
