Patented Oct. 18,V 1932 l UNrrEDg-STTS THEonoRE tBLAoK yAND GEORGE EARLYOUNG, or eniv'rongomo' I` Y PICKLING Bas-KET Application sled March 17, 1532. serial No. 599,520.
The invention relates to baskets for use in the pickling of forgings, castings and other metal articles. y
VIt is common practice, in pickling small forgings, castings, and the like, to shovel the articles to be pickled into a basket, which is then lowered into a pickling vat Where it remains until the pickling operation is completed, after which the basket is raised out of the pickling vat, the pieces beingthen transferred a few at a time from the pickling basket to a truck, conveyor or receptacle of suitable design. A
The object of the present improvement is to provide a pickling basket having the bottom formed of two Vhinged sections `with means fornormally holding said sections in closed position to retain the articles inthe basket, means being provided for releasing said hinged bottomv sections to permitthem to swing downward upon their hinges to discharge the contents of the basket into a suitable receptacle or onto a truck or 'con'- asV desired.
A further object is toV provide hinges for the bottom sections which also form Afeet to support the basket upon a floor or the like.
Another object of the .improvement ris to provide lugs upon the under surfaces ofthe hinged edges thereof, for contactwith a floor or the like to move said bottomrsections to closed position when the basket is lowered upon the floor.
` A still further object is to provide a basket of this character in which the interior of the basket is entirely unobstructed so as not to interfere in any way with the articles placed therein for pickling.
tained by constructing the improved pickling basket in the manner illustrated in the acr bottom sections, near the swinging basket showings@ hinged bea-,511, Stionsif, closed and locked position; and
` Figli, an enlarged fragmentary detaileley vation of the locking means for thehinged bottom sections.v Similar numerals 'refer to similar parts throughout the drawing. Y
The `improved pickling basket may be formed of any metal suitable for resisting the acid of the pickling bath and includes the sidewalls 10 of any suitable design provided with a multiplicity of openings, as indicated atl- 11, ofsuiicien'tsize and number to permit free' access of the pickling solution 'to the interior of the basket.
The upper and lower edges of the side walls maybe reinforced as indicated generally at '12. Y
` Angle plates 13 may be rivetedy or other, wise attached to theiupper corners VVof the basket for the connection of rods or cables 14 which may be attached to a ring orthe likeas'at 15in order that a hook as shown at 16, suspended from' a crane `0r the like,
may be attached to the basket for raising and lowering the same.
The bottom wall of the basket comprises two similar sections, :each indicated general-` ly at 17, hinged at' their outer edges to the lower edge portions of opposite sidewalls of the basket as by hinges 18, Each of these hinges maybe formed with a depending ,foot portion 19 upon which thebasket may be supported when lowered upon a floor Vor thelike. p f r ,f A Y d A lug 20 vis 'formed at each end of the i" swinging edge portionA of Veach of the hinged o bottom sections1'7, said lugs being adapted ytol normally rest upon the' angular latch members 21 located at the lower ends of the The above and other objects may be atf *Shafts 22 I These shafts are journaled beariDgSf23 provided upon opposite side-,walls of the basket and Aextending' slightly xabove then upper edge of thezbasket. Al'ever 24 is fixed f to the upper end of oneshaf't 22 and a lever 25 is lined to Vthe 'upper endof 'the other shaft, these leversbeing preferably located at Opposite angles asbest shown Fi'gB.
The lever 25 is preferably provided with i.
an angular handle'portion 26 bymeans of iria which the same can be manually operated.
- A link 27 is pivotally connected to the levers he V lowered .te
24 and 25 whereby the two sl1afts22 may be rotated a quarterturn in unison to move the latch members 2l out of Contact with the lugs 20, permitting the hinged bott-oni memhere 1.7 te Swing ,downward inte Open pesi tion, as shown 2, whereby Tthe .een tents of the basket Imay vbe instantly discharged therefrom.
Y With this ,Qenstnnetien it will he seen .that when the basket is raised from the pickling vat and moved over a receptacle, eonwleyei` or truck designed to receive the contents ofthe basket, the entire contents may 'be dis- .ehereed hy a pnll npen .the ,lever 26,
After the banket hee been emptied, it .lney the lHoor y zuid a slight inward nlerelnentief each hinged :hentemeeefien will bring the rounded lugs 28, upon the swinging edges thereof, into ,contact with the lioor whereby further lowering movement of the basket will cause the ldoors to auto- Innt-ienlly elese- The lever 26 may then 'be operated in -the opposite direction'to move the latch mem, bers 21 back into the locked position, the beveled edges 29 thereof assisting them to Venge;ge under the 'lug-s2() of .thehinged bottom sections, .locking ,them in position as Shown in .Fgl- We claim;l e
