HANDLE ASSEMBLY Filed July 16, 1928 F L 4? f. M L4,? 441T 1/ J r g 4 Patented Oct. 11, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWARD N. JACOBI, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO BRIGGS AND STRATTON i CORPORATION, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE HANDLE ASSEMBLY Application filed July 16,1928. Serial No. 292,961.
This invention relates to certain newand useful improvements in handle assemblies and has as an object the provision of improved and simplified means for mounting handles especially designed for the operation of automotive window regulators, door locks and the like whereby the radial position of the handle on its shaft may be readily adjusted to any angle.
A more specific object of this inventlon resides in the provision of an improved handle assembly in which the handle bore and the shaft are provided with a plurality of interlocking teeth whereby the handle may be readily non-rotatably mounted on the shaft in any radial position.
And a still further object of this invention resides in the provision of an improved handle assembly whereby the handle may be readily engaged on its shaft in any radial position with respect thereto and having means whereby the engagement ofxthe handle over its shaft locks the same thereon.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the preciseembodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a View, partly in section and partly in elevation, of a window handle assembly embodying my invention; and
Figure 2 is an enlarged, sectional view, taken transversely through Figure 1 on the plane of the line 2-2.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like numerals designate like parts, 5 designates a shaft which, in the present instance, is illustrated as being the operating shaft of a window regulating mechanism, a portion 6 of which is shown, the shaft having an operatmg handle or lever member 7 secured on its outer end to impart rotation to the shaft and operate the regulator. The outer end of the shaft has its surface longitudinally serrated to provide a plurality of s aced teeth 8 which are adapted to have a airly snu fit between correspondingly shaped an spaced longitudinal teeth 9 formed in the wall of bore 10 in a hub or boss 11, on one end of the handle member.
The intermeshed teeth 8 and 9 provide a non-rotatable connection between the handle member and the shaft 7 and also permit comparatively fine radial adjustment of the handle on the shaft making it possible for the automotive manufacturer to adjust all the handle members of the car to the same circumferential position when the windows are closed to maintain uniformity of ap The boss 11 is grooved or channeled, as at 17, in register with the recesses 15, so that the entire spring is disposed within the plane of its circumference.
The extreme outer end of the shaft 5 is preferably tapered, as at 18, to facilitate the positioning of the handle 7 on the shaft and acts as a cam to spread the detent fingers 14 of the spring as the handle member is engaged over the shaft, the detent fingers snapping into the annular channel 16 as they register therewith, as will be readily apparent. ,VVhen it is desired to remove the handle 7 for the purpose of repair or replacement of the parts, a tool is inserted in the groove 17 at either end of the spring 12 in order to disengage it.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent to t ose skilled in the art to which an invention of the character described'appertains, that I provide an improved and simplified means for securing the handle member on its shaft and for permitting the adjustment of the handle to any at I claim as my invention is:
In combination with a shaft to be turned, a lever arm for imparting rotation thereto, a boss projecting from one side of the lever arm and having a bore to receive the shaft end, longitudinal serrations in the wall of the bore, lon itudinal serrations on the shaft end engagea le with the serrations in the lever arm bore to secure the lever arm against rotation with respect to the shaft in any desired position of circumferential adjustment, the shaft end having an annular groove, and the lever arm boss having a groove encircling part of its circumference and opening into the bore at the ends of the groove, and a spring detent lying entirely within the groove formed in the boss with its end portions projected through the openings therein to engage the groove in the shaft, the extreme end of the shaft being tapered so that the end portions of the spring detent are automatically engageable with the shaft groove upon engagement of the lever arm with the shaft en In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
