DAVID MOYER, OF TABERG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,172, dated March 6, 1877; application filed May 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID MOYER, of Ta berg, in thecounty of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Fence-Posts and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation, of a board fence constructed with my improved fence-post.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention consists in the combination of a fence-post made of wood or metal with a removable metallic rod, substantially as and for the purpose which I shall now proceed more fully to describe.
A is the body of the post, which is, preferably, square in its horizontal section, and is provided with projections (denoted by B) on one side. These projections are perforated vertically to admit of the insertion of the metallic rod 0, which has a button, 0, at its top end to keep it in place and prevent it from slipping through the perforations in projections B. F is a top piece or cap, having a perforation, f, for the insertion of rod 0. H
denotes the blocks or stones placed upon the base in the ground alongside of the post, to
keep it securely in its place.
My improved post is used as follows: The rod 0 is removed and the boards I are inserted edgewise between the projections B, as shown in the front elevation, Fig. 2. The boards may either be so inserted as to overlap each other or the ends may be mitered so as to fit each other. If the boards are wider than the spaces between the projections B on the post A, they are prevented from moving by a shoulder, 73, fitting onto the boards, and abutting against the blocks k, which project from post A between the projections B.
The advantages of my improved post are: the planks of which the fence is constructed may be readily removed by simply removing the rod G, which keeps them in place, so that the fence may be easily taken down in the fall, to prevent drifting, and may be put up again in the spring without waste.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of a fence-post, A, having laterally-projectin g perforated brackets B, with the vertically-sliding and removable rod 0, having button 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID MOYER. Witnesses:
R. B. MAXFIELD, JAMES H. FERGUSON.
