The sliding members g and 7L are'provided with an opening or are designed in such a way that each of the rocking levers e and j is adapted to engage one of said members through the partition. The rocking levers depress the sliding members with the parts g1, g2 and 71.1 in such al way that the sliding member g with the plates g1` and g2 moves ahead, so that they can detach a length of wire and bend the `ends. of same into a staple over an abutment Z (Figure 4). When the machine is in the fully closed position the tips of the staple encounter the anvil a1 or the recesses a2 and are bent over as lshown in Figure 6.

The wire is fed forward intermittently with the opening and closing of the machine and the movement of the tools for forming the staples and the feeding is timed so that in openingthe jaws of the machine, a suiicient length of wire to form a staple is moved into position under the tools. For `this reason the feed device is connected with one of the levers for actuating the tools, namely the lever z' in the embodiment described. The

The method of operation will be evident i from the description, when the papers to be fastened are inserted in the jaws of the machine, the latter is closed by squeezing the handles. This causes the levers i andy' to move and insert the staples in the manner described. The movement of the lever 'z' causes the lever `m and n positively connected therewith to describe an anticlocfkwise movement. The movement of the lever fn, is transmitted by the bar s to the cam lever 7' and tube p. During the subsequent opening of the machine, the wire is 'fed forward. Since, in the meantime, the discharge opening has been freed by the ejection of the preformed staples, the wire is free to enter said opening and the machine is then ready for the next working operation.
We claim:
l. A hand stapler of the .plier type in which `staples `are automatically detached and formed, when the jaws of the plierslare closed, acasing pivotally mounted on the pivot of the jaw members and carrying staple forming and setting members, said casing `carry- :ing a wire reel, one of the jaws being forked at its free end to form operating cams, and levers'operated' by the said cams for actuating the staple forming and :setting members.

A hand 'stapler of the plier type in which staples are .automatically detached and formed when the jaws of the pliers are closed, -a casing pivotally mounted on the pivot of the jaw members and carrying staple forming and setting tools, one half of the mouth Vof the machine forming the casing in which are combined the tools for forming the staples, this end of the mouth of the machine being bent at an angle, the wire coming from a reel on-tlie said casing passing to the staple forming and setting plungers Vthrough a divided tube having a slidable member carrying` a clamping lever which projects into the tube and is engaged by a draw bar, a lever actuating the staple former and engaged by a two-armed lever which, on the descent of the lever, impaits a positive rearward swing to a lspringcontrolled lever, said lever being spring actuated to draw forward the drawbar with the clamping-lever and the slidable tube in order to feed in the forward direction a portion of wire corresponding to the length of a staple.
